stephbg: I made this! (cat herder)

Unless you are very unfortunate, the death of someone you know always comes as a shock. It's not always a surprise, but it's generally a shock. In the last week I've heard of two deaths by suicide, not by people close to me personally, but close enough to have stirred many thoughts. This post is in the service of those thoughts, which are unlikely to be organised but I need to get them out of my head.

It is an unfortunate truth of spoon management that you often have no choice in the timing of most activities. If spoons become available you immediately perform the next item on the to-do list. Thus I found myself shopping for groceries at lunchtime on a Saturday, the busiest time of the week, albeit short of pre-holiday panic shopping for the apocalypse.

Today I attended the memorial service for my friend Mikey O'Brien who was cruelly taken by cancer last week at the age of 42.

Lovely Husband broke me out of Sector 7 this morning for a really nice outing lasting about 3 hours. The cold has finally broken it's grip and I've been as restless as all hell so I Had To Get Out. The cats have been driving me bezerk - either clinging to me en masse, or complaining loudly for service. Flufficide has been contemplated.

Dear Universe,
You've been shovelling some particularly unpleasant major life-and-death shit in the direction of some friends of mine, and I must say it's making me more than a little cross. I know from experience that asking you to leave off with the big bad things is a waste of time, and not much can deter you from your little games. However, I have a proposal: whatever you had planned for my friend, lay off her and kick it to me. Double it if you like, but leave her the hell alone.

Went to a family wedding down by the Swan River this afternoon, at the Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. In the vernacular of the classic wedding ice-breaker question of "Are you with the Bride or Groom?" I was the Bride's Father's Cousin's Wife (short form "Bride's Cousin" but the whole point of the CWIBQ is to make the answer as long as humanly possible to give the conversation a leg to stand on).

The Daily WTF is a website of "Curious Perversions in Information Technology" and I read it every day. I also count this reading towards the professional development hours^ I am required to compete every year to maintain my certification as a Computer Professional via the Australian Computer Society (ACS). You may ask how I could possibly justify this as an educational activity. I'll tell you why.

After way too long without my fish I am now the proud mother of three pygmy perch (native, frog-friendly) and 5 minnows (introduced, but unlikely to survive in the wild, and also frog-friendly).

Ever wondered what [livejournal.com profile] doctor_k_ looked like in 1983?

Or possibly 1987. It seemed important at the time; just a little thing, the difference between Year 11 and Year 12. I'm the one on the right, with the most hair. I'm either 15 1/2 or 16 1/2. I suspect the latter, although I'm torn because I think that was the year that my date Malcolm (sourced independently from ballroom dancing I might add, so worth 10 mere boy classmates) went home with my friend (hmmm) Sandrine (not pictured). That does it, it was 1996 (oops) 1986.

I Can't Believe It's Not WorldCon kicked off well with a perfectly sized attendance for the venue (i.e. there were enough chairs). FGoH (Furry Guest of Honour) Pumpkin proved that he really does exist IRL and circulated with flair. He allowed himself to be handled by strangers which is all we ask of any GoH.

To all the people who would normally attend Swancon and didn't/couldn't, plus all the people I'd hoped to catch up with but haven't and may yet not:

You are missed. I'd name names, but I shudder at the consequences of leaving someone off the list. It's like a Bill of Rights: seems like a good idea, but if you leave something out you're in a world of pain and paperwork.

love,
me

Cats Do Control Humans, Study Finds

Household cats exercise this control with a certain type of urgent-sounding, high-pitched meow... This meow is actually a purr mixed with a high-pitched cry.

Studies find lots of things, so why can't they find my keys?

My favourite understatement of the month: "Setting up the experiments wasn't easy."

Major congratulations, warm fuzzies and happy years to [livejournal.com profile] redbraids and [livejournal.com profile] mikey_ob on the occasion of their wedding. The bride and groom looked positively *regal*. That's the only word for it *happy sigh*. In fact the capacity crowd were very impressively attired, despite the many last-minute wardrobe adjustments required to cope with the suddenly bracing conditions. We could collectively offer no less to such a couple. Look Mum, no bogans!

I love a good wedding )

I scraped my spoons together this afternoon, determined to make it to a friend's wedding although the reception was out of the question. Friend D is a former minion and absolutely fabulous person and professional. Throws a damn fine wedding too :-)

Just me getting lost and seeing too much of a Bad Wedding )

Skip to the proper wedding )
