It’s a few weeks since our return so I’d best try to get something down about Melbourne before it all flees my aged head. I’m afraid it’s a bit long.

Husband and I enjoy looking at Art together, so it was on his suggestion that we extended this wedding trip to include a quick dash to Hobart to visit MONA - the Museum of Old and New Art.

In which I continue the tale of our Feb 2013 trip Over East. In the previous post we’d arrived in Hobart for a brief 2 night stay. In a rare moment of economy and risk I’d booked us into a cheap mystery hotel deal via Wotif.com, knowing only that it would be a four star hotel in the Hobart CBD, specifically handy to the MONA ferry departure point. This ended up being the Macquarie Manor Heritage Hotel. At time of booking I made a request for “minimal stairs to room” just in case the unknown hotel ended up being a heritage building with no lift, as per the last lovely but hazardous B&B we stayed in a few years ago. Turns out I was right, sort of.

In Melbourne we stayed at The Hotel Windsor on Spring Street, right over the road from the Victorian parliament house, and oh-so-conveniently exactly at a stop on the city circle free tram route. It was teh awesome.

And so we're back, from outer space Adelaide and Melbourne, with many meaty things blog about in the traditional manner. But meaty blogging is a bit beyond me still, for having pushed mightily beyond my boundaries again and again during the trip (and a bonus family thing on Saturday night) I find myself without will or wit. However, I'll try to throw a few discussion points together and see if I manage to expand upon them later in deathless prose.

Mum recently returned from a trip to Canada which included several train tours through the Rockies. I naturally requested a souvenir of a rock from the Rockies, and Mother obliged. She also acquired some others for me. Score!

It will come as no surprise to anyone who knows me that I find flying troublesome on many levels. But each time I do it I learn something new. Today I came home from a quick turnaround trip to Adelaide, which at 3 - 3 1/2 hours (depending on direction) is the shortest city flight you can do from Perth. Read more... )

On our bumpy 5 1/5hr flight from Brisbane to Perth, it was my fate to sit across the aisle from a mother, father, infant and toddler, all squeezed into 3 economy seats.

Some semi-random observations about the great city of Brisbane, largely expressed as a compare-and-contrast with Perth. So I'm a hick. Sue me.

Because I can't get on with my life until I've written it all down )

While in Brisbane (in a mangrove swamp to be precise) Husband and I decided to go to AussieCon 4/Worldcon 2010 in Melbourne, which is conveniently just before my 40th birthday.

*goggle*

Who else is planning to go?

Dreamworld on the Gold Coast has other attractions apart from Tiger Island. Apparently.

No, really )
stephbg: I made this! (Default)
Even without the special personal tiger experience at Dreamworld, the Tiger Island setup is very impressive. The main habitat is separated from the viewing public by a deep moat, so you can watch the tigers hanging about throughout the day unimpeded. There are also twice daily "behaviour presentations".

Step 1. Pay cash.
Step 2. Get there.
Step 3. Be told things.
Step 4. Get the photography out of the way
Step 5. Enjoy some quality time with a huge beautiful animal.

This is one of the professional stills of Husband and myself with Mohan, a 14-year-old white tiger at Dreamworld:

I have much to do and much to write. But not just yet.

Tigers!

I've been bereft of internet support for DAYS but I can now report briefly that I have indeed touched a tiger. Excruciating detail and video to follow.

Not sure what access to facilities I'll have in the wilds of Queensland, so there's a chance I'll be quiet for a bit. Big thanks to friends and demons of hell alike for guarding my crypt abode while we're away. Watch out for the poison-tipped man traps art installations.

I can't begin to compete with [livejournal.com profile] doctor_k_'s recent weather experiences, but this is what is waiting for me in sunny Brisbane:

Wednesday Possible late storm Min 20 Max 32
Thursday Possible late storm Min 20 Max 32
Friday Possible late storm Min 20 Max 32
Saturday Late storm Min 21 Max 34
Sunday Few showers developing. Late storm Min 22 Max 32
Monday Possible late storm Min 22 Max 31

Spot the common denominator. Amongst the lazy unformatted text. Meh.

Just checking on the current carry-on baggage regulations--mainly because I have to carry water all the time and golly I could use it to rust a wing off mid-flight--and came across the following:

'Sporting goods' include but are not limited to: sporting bats, billiard/snooker/pool cues, catapults.

Not even a tiny catapult? A trebuchet? Any other siege engine? What kind of sporting nation are we?
