Occasionally I need to give myself a bigger nudge than usual to make sure that I'm not pretending faking lying just a bit sad just a bit tired under-estimating my capacity for activity, and so today I made a non-negotiable appointment to go to the stables. I made no promises to do anything, just to dress sufficiently to cover my nakedness (if not quite well enough to be around livestock), drive there, walk in the gate and check in with the coach. OK, that's quite a lot by today's standards.

Was very pleased today to receive a Riding for the Disabled (RDA) newsletter with some dates for the new term.

Am exceedingly happy to report that today I not only went to the stables, but was actively useful for a whole hour and a half. Yes, have overdone it, but in the best possible way.

I am very pleased to report that I managed to get to the stables today, by way of work for a couple of hours. It felt a bit cosplayish to dress horsey for the office, although being an engineering firm it's not especially corporate.

Through the twin miracles of caffeine and sugar on a mostly empty stomach I managed a solid 4 hour workday today, and with perhaps foolish overconfidence I then went directly to the stables. Jeans tucked in to boots not possibly the best look, but I managed to stay out of the mud.

Empty stomach due to having the power off all day for maintenance. I was too lazy to use gas to make porridge on the stovetop. I think I had celery and chic peas for breakfast, but dinner last night was a goodly sized serve of pasta so I'm in no danger of fading away to nothing.

My leading story is that I went to work this morning and managed a couple of hours of reading, planning, and outlining for the next section of work. This follows from yesterday's packaging and delivering of drafts for technical review, so I've had a sense of achievement to boot.

I got to work today! Yay! Only for a wobbly 1 1/2 hours but that's a big improvement over nothing. Back to working on zombies, and soon I'll get to document notification e-mail templates. Got home in one piece, rested up, changed, then went to the stables. Yay! So, what magical horse whispery insight did I gain today?

Caffeine is my friend, until it isn't. Today it was my BFF. I did a good session at work (aided by a fairly ordinary but otherwise effective coffee that may or may not have been a single shot trad macchiato with cold milk and one sugar), then I got a niggly errand out of the way, did some ordinary shopping, a spot of research, and then had an *awesome* session at RDA.

Me! From the outside! I have horsed around and around and around. First lesson as leader. More later, probably.

Today I went to work: Yay! And started documenting a disaster recovery process! I have a perfectly valid reason to write the words "Don't panic" in large friendly letters. Then this afternoon I went to the stables and managed to be useful and learn new things.

I dragged myself into work today more out of stubbornness and cabin fever than anything else, but then I got myself to the stables for some much-missed equine communion.

A little about work, but mostly the horses. Warning: it gets a bit slashy towards the end. )

Hoofing it

Made it to the stables this afternoon for a conservative 1 hour session that didn't involve any heavy lifting, unless you count holding a quarter of a horse at a time. This time I left before I started to limp, but still felt I'd contributed something without wasting anyone's time, and yet learned things. Nice combo that.

[livejournal.com profile] zebra363 I was thinking of you today: I decreed it Hoof Day.

This horse therapy thing is working out just as well as I'd hoped, and really quite quickly. Warning: horse content )

I spent a couple of hours at the RDA today. I had a very helpful talk with the president, who told me ever so gently that everything works fine, and that it only takes a couple of weeks for new volunteers to get to know the horses, and that was OK. My experience last week (where there was a serious amount of confusion about who was who and what went where) was apparently unusual enough to warrant investigation, but otherwise I was encouraged to go with the flow. I learned more about the culture of the place, which is different to anything I've ever encountered before. My lessons in adaptation proceed, and today everything seemed more under control.

I swear I didn't want this to happen, and I hope I can deal with the consequences. It happened much faster than I feared it might. I just can't help myself :-(

Late night rant warning, and high levels of horse content. Hey, it makes a change from cats. )

I seemed to pack a lot into today, for which I'm pretty sure I'll be punished soon, but it included several varieties of good news. Tech, vet, med, hippo )

I visited the local RDA branch today to get the next step in volunteering underway. My application for a Working With Children card has now been signed by the secretary, and I've been to the post office to be formally identified and--joy of joys--photographed for my new ID. It seems like a reasonably large co-incidence that the man in front of me in the post office queue was doing exactly the same thing.

EDIT: No, I think I'll leave it exactly as written last night, if only to mark the terrifying realisation that I don't remember writing parts of it, and clearly I was in no state to perform even rudimentary editing.

Today I progressed another micro-step on the RDA volunteer trail, and picked up an "Application for a Working With Children Check" form from the post office. I know it seems like I'm dragging my heels, but I've had to wait for term to start so it's been a slow-motion e-mail correspondence since the start of the year.

I hate forms )
