stephbg: I made this! (cat herder)

This is a frivolous post. I have not assigned spoons for this, nor is it anywhere in my various lists of priorities. My lists of priority tasks are long; my spoons are short. I can't really afford this. But sometimes you just have to kick over the traces and do whatever you damn want to. So I'm going to ramble for a bit.

tl;dr I ramble for quite a bit.

My efforts to connect to the intertubes are being thwarted at every turn. It's getting messier by the day so I thought it would be best to do a recap. Bonus points if I can actually post! (ETA It only took 2 attempts.) I've been on dialup speed for a month now and it's very depressing.

This evening I was wildly overjoyed that I managed to go to an Australian Computer Society (ACS) branch meeting. It's been a very long time since I've managed it, and have missed some really great topics/lectures. But tonight's "The Art and Science of Diagramming: Communicating Effectively Using Diagrams" was a subject very close to my heart, so I poured on the painkillers and caffeine to get myself there.

I have just sent the following letter of complaint to my ISP Three regarding the collapse of their mobile broadband service following a merger with Vodafone. I don't do this sort of thing often; I find it exhausting, and that's starting from a position of already exhausted. Let's see what happens.

Today Yesterday I had the kind of day that pretty much demands a blog post, if only for the purposes of propping up my indeed quite dodgy memory. There were thrills and spills, new toys, broken toys, technical trickery, rather too much time on the phone to all the wrong people, and something else that escapes me, but may yet return in the process of writing this post. In which case I'll probably come back and edit that last bit and you'll never know about the lapse.

Or not.

ETA: Now I remember. I discovered that one of the cats had vomited on one of my favourite books. A paperback.

And now it's the next day and I'm lost and rambling. This is a bit long.

This evening I took delivery of a new microscope. A proper microscope. Coming soon a 10 MP camera, and depending on results this may be followed by some extra lighting and optics. But hang on, I hear you say, don't you already have a microscope and camera? What have you beeen using all this time to take pretty rock picktures? Witchcraft and old copies of Hansard?

I've written about Klout several times before, namely re its bizarre claim that I was influential about the New York Jets. I played the game for a while which bumped up my score, but then I grew weary of it and stopped bothering. Thanks to everyone who helped. This post describes the current state of play.

This is a slideshow I put together of the photos taken during the tower disassembly last Saturday. Small warning - I find the ending terribly sad, but I imagine that's only because I'm so close to it all.

Seraphinite is beautiful stuff. It was discovered relatively recently so it's not all that common in shops, but it makes beautifully patterned polished stones for jewellry. The reason it's called Seraphinite is because the patterns resemble wings, in gloriously gleaming shades of green and silver. Yes, like recent features pietersite and chaoite it's another chatoyant rock, and a complete bitch. Satan was a fallen angel; I think this is his favourite stone.

Pietersite, oh pietersite, what heartache you've caused me. Since my first look at a piece of tumbled pietersite I've wanted to get in and take a closer look, but it's really resisted my efforts to capture its beauty. I've made some pretty pictures, but it's been frustrating knowing how much better they could be. But gradually I've come closer and closer, and today made another advance.

I'm in the mood for a process post so I thought I'd string together a few related pictures showing how I go from a slice of rock to something I'm proud to claim is Art. We'll follow the journey of a piece of East Java plume agate.

For those who came in late, click here for the story of Vlad the Impala so far. tl;dr: I made a lol and had a think about the nature of social networks. There have been developments since then.

In this post I'd like to deconstruct (and thus ruin) a joke, and as a bonus briefly (ha!) analyse a lesson learned about shamelessly exploiting harnessing social media for fun and you've got to be kidding profit.

The Daily WTF is a website of "Curious Perversions in Information Technology" and I read it every day. I also count this reading towards the professional development hours^ I am required to compete every year to maintain my certification as a Computer Professional via the Australian Computer Society (ACS). You may ask how I could possibly justify this as an educational activity. I'll tell you why.

I recently bought a 3gs phone battery on eBay, which was allegedly brand new. To my eye the one I received looks a bit battered, but I don't see many (i.e. none) phone batteries. Would people mind taking a look and letting me know if this looks like a new battery, or should I complain?
