Swancon is here again and come hell or high water I'm going again for the full event and staying at the convention hotel. I think this will be my 14th, so I've a long way to go before I collect a badge – they only hand those out to people who've been to 20 or 33. This year is the 40th, and doubles as the NatCon.

As SwanCon 2015 is both the NatCon and 40th Swancon, I'd really like to get myself organised this year to turn Pretty Rocks on Frocks fabric(s) into a ball gown of some sort I can wear at the masquerade. This is an Organise My Thoughts post to get things moving along, in the traditionally disorganised format.

Over the Easter break I made my annual pilgrimage to Swancon, the annual WA speculative fiction convention. I stayed at the con hotel and was able able to attend the entire event (off and on) from opening to closing ceremony. I only had my phone with me so made short posts to Facebook rather than longer con reports here. "Proper" con reports are still a bit beyond me, but I'll reproduce the FB posts here and annotate as seems necessary. Dates and time for particular entries may be a bit fuzzy, but I'm hopeful that there are unlikely to be any legal implications from sloppy record-keeping. Lawyers, fussy things.

I haven't blogged much this year, and indeed have failed to blog many non-trivial things at all (part 2 of our Dunsborough anniversary trip being but one case in point). This is actually informative, because it reflects a year of poor health, even by my standards. Actually my poor health is one of the few things I did document even remotely properly, because of the amount of information I needed to track. This does not please me.

This is not so much a con report for Swancon 2013 as a memory dump, so we'll just see what comes out.

It's quite a while since I've posted actual life updatery here, so I'll see what comes of a ramble.

I'm in the mood for a process post so I thought I'd string together a few related pictures showing how I go from a slice of rock to something I'm proud to claim is Art. We'll follow the journey of a piece of East Java plume agate.

I have found unexpected pleasure in the rock photographs, discovering images I never knew were there. Like this piece of moss agate: Read more... )

I have a lot to say about Swancon 36/Natcon 50, not because I'm nit-picky, but because I tend to observe a lot of detail. I also can't resist making hypotheses based on insufficient data. One day the data may come, but until then I retain my right to make guesses and have opinions. Memory is also a fickle thing; I'll do my best to report what I observed and felt at the time. If I'm not confident about that memory, I'll say so, but to me errors in perception and recall are interesting, and generally the source of much debate.

All that said, I want to state as clearly as possible that I am not attempting to upset or offend anyone.

Abstract

I had an absolute blast, interspersed with a lot of quiet recovery time in my lovely hotel room. The fun factors were different to those of other Swancons I have attended, and on that basis there were also some disappointments. My illness prevented me from participating in the planning and execution of the con to a degree I found actively distressing.

Hi. I am at Swancon 36/Natcon 50. I am alive, and hope in time to produce a multi part con report. I've been using FB to make notes, but of a somewhat selective variety. I've had fun. Waaaaaaaay too much fun, but it will be interesting to observe the effects in the days to come. Who knows, all this carousing and happiness might be good for my health.

I'm really looking forward to my annual escape and adventure at Swancon, this year at The Hyatt for extra swishness. For purposes of identification I currently have long straight dark hair with purple ends, possibly worn in plaits. I'll be wearing a nametag, which might help too.

Darkness of the variety "the sun is on the other side of the planet" rather than the less attractive options of sightlessness, or deep depression. I'm up at 2am so I'll just ramble for a bit and see what comes out.

Started the day with an exciting development: had a shower, dried off and got completely dressed without having to negotiate for spoons! I just, like, DID it! Woo!

I think my next Swancon costume set has introduced itself to me. I see trips to Spotlight, Bunnings, and Radio Spares in my future. Power! I need Power! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

On the down side, I also see trips to every damn $2 Shop in the city in search of Bits :-(

I think I'm going to need a bigger sewing machine.

Since a certain degree of mystery seemed like a good idea during development, I'd like to record some thoughts here about the design and development of my (and Husband's) masquerade costumes; collectively we were the Motion Capture Team. The trickiest part was trying to cover our bodies not too loose and not too tight, and also not to overheat.

Photos here (and a couple of individual shots below the cut). We're the black-with-orange-dots people in the first three shots. The individual winner (ZOMG awesome) PK in the pink preying mantis outfit on the second row. I'm not sure how he feels about having his name online, so if someone knows I'll fill it in properly later.

What? Why? How? )
