stephbg: I made this! (cat herder)

A few days after my last post about Cally, and as she came down after her latest dose of Tramal, it became clear that her time had come. The signs were many, but in essence she was going to be back in pain and discomfort for at least another couple of days before I could give her more pain relief. And the nature of that pain relief was making her treatment look more and more like the jerking of a puppet. Her eyes said no more. Her whiskers said no more. It was time.

I haven't blogged much this year, and indeed have failed to blog many non-trivial things at all (part 2 of our Dunsborough anniversary trip being but one case in point). This is actually informative, because it reflects a year of poor health, even by my standards. Actually my poor health is one of the few things I did document even remotely properly, because of the amount of information I needed to track. This does not please me.

Last Sunday several family members including myself trekked out to Whiteman Park to visit the clubrooms of the Northern Corridor Radio Group to see Dad’s ham radio tower in its new home.

What did I do during Cyclone Alby in 1978? I stood outside communing with the wind until I was dragged inside for my own safety.

Timber!

Calisthenics (CT for my convenience) is a type of cult for young girls, with a broad doctrine of fitness, flexibility, deportment, co-ordination, teamwork, singing, dancing and theatricality. It kicked off in the 50's and I got my turn in the mid 70's, following in the footsteps of my three sisters. After a fashion, as you will find out.

If you don't believe me, see what the web site has to say:

Children of all ages thrive on the variety and challenges offered in the many facets of Calisthenics - a combination of controlled exercises and gymnastics, marching, singing, simplified ballet, folk and modern dance. It combines the best aspects of sport and art.

Art = sequins and fake tan.

Sport = brutal discipline.

It had everything.

I've scanned a new batch of family photos today, primarily for the purpose of talking about Calisthenics and Mum's amazing ability to sew sequins on demand. Got distracted by the older black and whites and felt the urge to post a few family shots in no readily apparent order.

I was in Brisbane in December 2008 for my cousin's wedding and the chance to meet tigers. This is an excerpt from one of my blog entries at the time and it's a shame to think of all those lovely facilities being given a dunking, never mind a dose of fast-running wreckage.

About this time last year I made a list. Let's see how that went. (May or may not do the actual year wrapup meme later.)

Although I didn't really appreciate it at the time, as youth is indeed wasted on the young, I had a fairly seriously geeky upbringing. My Dad is an amateur radio enthusiast, aka a Ham. So, along with the relatively well documented family cats the family album included more than a shot or two of radio gear.

Lurking in the family album I found this action shot from Christmas 1986, taken in the folks' backyard. We were playing backyard cricket/baseball with a shovel for a bat and lemons for balls. The lemons tended to explode on impact, and I'm not quite sure if there was a scoring system. Or teams. But roundish things were thrown and struck with longish things, and there were appeals and celebrations.

John Scalzi has done another post of interesting and possibly unique things that he has done. The post and especially the comments make for fun reading, and I swear I recognise a few people from their lists.

Here's my list of probably not unique, but special memories. They appear in comment #120 on the Scalzi post.

This is a picture of my brother Dave taken in the front hall of the family home in 1981. Perhaps more importantly (for there are better pictures of Dave) it's a photo of the carpet, wallpaper, and faux woodgrain contact on the front door. Also note the delicate design of the telephonic communication device.

Or possibly 1987. It seemed important at the time; just a little thing, the difference between Year 11 and Year 12. I'm the one on the right, with the most hair. I'm either 15 1/2 or 16 1/2. I suspect the latter, although I'm torn because I think that was the year that my date Malcolm (sourced independently from ballroom dancing I might add, so worth 10 mere boy classmates) went home with my friend (hmmm) Sandrine (not pictured). That does it, it was 1996 (oops) 1986.

Very few photos exist of me on horseback, or even in the general vicinity of horses. There are a few reasons for this, but chief amongst thme was that in 1982 cameras were the size of horses, only the adults owned a camera, and film was precious. There was little room for DIY because you couldn't exactly take the camera with you in the saddle. Suffice to say that these are rare shots indeed.

I've never been particularly keen on the battery chicken horses in thoroughbred racing, but I must say you can certainly spot the quality around Melbourne Cup time. So You Think is one heck of a good-looking horsie. Husband displays significantly less enthusiasm for the sport than I, and apart from a mystical belief* in The Power of Lotto (cue angelic chorus), he has no interest in gambling either, so I was a little surprised when he came home with a trifecta bet on the MC that displayed not a little attention to form with the dash of wishful thinking that rakes in the big money: Read more... )
