stephbg: I made this! (cat herder)

The next post I'm supposed to write is a description of a doctor's appointment some two weeks ago, and the modifications to my medications that arose from that visit. This isn't it, but I've been reminded (hi Mum) that I haven't blogged here in a month and so I thought I'd ramble for a bit at the traditional blogging hour of 1:30 am.

About a month ago we took delivery of a load of mulch via the Mulchnet service, which is a marketplace that links people seeking mulch and tree contractors who have fresh woodchips to get rid of. You can register for free mulch and hope and wait, or you can pay for just delivery which will increase your chances of getting some, or like us you can pay a bit more (still much less than landscaping supplies cost) for a definite delivery when a load becomes available in the local area.

We paid in cash, but a couple of days ago we received an invoice for that amount from the tree contractor.

Welcome to the inaugural fungus of the day post. [livejournal.com profile] urbpan I blame you for this one, and [livejournal.com profile] drhoz I don't think you can escape either.

Slugs as seen on the side of my pond this fine--albeit spectacularly unspectacular--New Year's dawn 2012.

Went to the disturbingly nearby (albeit surprisingly difficult to access) Watergarden World this afternoon and acquired some duckweed, dwarf papyrus, and something leafy and varigated I've already forgotten the name of. Oops. (ED: Water Fringe). Also, three pygmy perch which I am assured are both frog friendly and dolphin mosquito hostile. Mix with pond and pump and lo, a water garden.

Extracted myself from the house today to visit Carine open space, home of the horsies and sundry until-recently-not-very wetlands.

Have achieved much in the last couple of days and am pleased, although am literally shaking from muscle fatigue. Oops. Still, it's been nice to have the option of overdoing things which I've not enjoyed for over a month.

I spent quite a lot of today bent double trying to release the side of the house from the grip of zombies.

Zombies you say? )

This afternoon I tackled a much-deferred job and tested the reticulation. I am *very* pleased about this.

Mmmm. Soggy )

Step 1: Plant lots of things with a strong will to live.
Step 2: Stay out of their way
Step 3: Photograph the survivors:

Last night Husband played a big band gig at The Charles Hotel, but couldn't bring all his gear home at once. So today he had to come back to collect the big bass speaker. I asked to tag along for the ride so we could have some time together, for he will be working tomorrow and needed a quite day today. No art or whales today.

My Albany Woolley Bush is no more :-( Caught like a sail in the wind it snapped off at ground level.

Just received our water use bill and the news is good. Although our block is quite large (819m2) our water consumption was 23.7% of our suburb's average without a bore, and 37.2% of the suburb average household even with a bore. So we're using much less water on the garden and in the house than the neighbours.

After a handful of pruning sessions my garden now looks far worse, as it now features a charming mix of neglect *and* devastation. I keep expecting to find a member of Greenpeace chained to the shrubbery. The geek part came in when I mentally tagged the pile of cuttings as biomass.

It's very nice to be writing list posts again; it feels like a long time since I've done more than a single thing in a day--and lucky if that. It excites me that I might even forget everything I've done today. I want to record my progress but it might not make very exciting reading for anyone else, so feel free to step off the bus here.

A couple of days ago I allowed myself a celebratory rasher of bacon, thinking only of the amine load. And how incredibly yummy the stuff is.

Preservatives, you idiot )
