I’ve just spent an interesting few minutes watching two of my White Cloud Mountain Minnows have what I assume to be some kind of dominance duel.

There have been Goings On in the pond of late. I have definitely counted EIGHT baby Western Pygmy Perch now, and I’m more than a little suspicious about one of the tiny ones I saw yesterday – it seemed very small indeed, so could that be a new arrival and number NINE? Stay tuned.

It's just struck me that the high point of my day was experienced while shopping for kitty litter. Some might find this state of affairs depressing; I was just glad to get out of the house, albeit with heavy dependence on The Stick.

Have just discovered more eggs in the fish pond, which might explain a few things.

Was *very* excited this afternoon to discover two baby fish in the pond. No idea yet whether they're minnows or perch, but as [livejournal.com profile] leecetheartist has reported baby minnows in her pond appearing just yesterday it strikes me as more likely these are baby minnows. Statistically too, 15 minnows would stand a better chance of reproducing than 3 perch, particularly as Disco Stu was brought in for stud duties well into the season. Now I look back on my discovery of non-snail eggs on the pump housing even then I thought them more likely to be minnows.

Lives! Tiny lives!

The fish are quite thoroughly domesticatd life actually, and amazingly tame to boot. For those who came in late, these are mostly minnows, with three Western Pygmy Perch. One picture shows them happily swimming around my hand, the rest are crowd scenes.

In the recent past I've bought a number of items for mind, home and body, most of which were painless transactions. Recently, however, things have gone a little pear shaped. (ED: +1) Read more... )

After way too long without my fish I am now the proud mother of three pygmy perch (native, frog-friendly) and 5 minnows (introduced, but unlikely to survive in the wild, and also frog-friendly).

Went to the disturbingly nearby (albeit surprisingly difficult to access) Watergarden World this afternoon and acquired some duckweed, dwarf papyrus, and something leafy and varigated I've already forgotten the name of. Oops. (ED: Water Fringe). Also, three pygmy perch which I am assured are both frog friendly and dolphin mosquito hostile. Mix with pond and pump and lo, a water garden.

Extracted myself from the house today to visit Carine open space, home of the horsies and sundry until-recently-not-very wetlands.

Went with Husband for the second (and hopefully last) time to the local Video Ezy closing down sale and acquired *cough* a few more titles. List to be posted separately. Then it was down to Hillary's boat harbour again for coffee, solar radiation, sculpture, and wildlife.
