A couple of days ago I allowed myself a celebratory rasher of bacon, thinking only of the amine load. And how incredibly yummy the stuff is.

I forgot about preservatives. Doh. I've had some of my worst reactions from preservatives (The Great Sultana Trial leaps to mind, and The Tooth Mousse Incident), but it wasn't until I felt dizzy and started to shake that I thought to check the diary and the books. Too much damn information sometimes. I'd prefer to use my brain for something else, frankly.

I passed on the driveway-based sun worship, for a neighbour is hosting some kind of popular gathering involving a bouncy castle. I did manage to get some sun by hacking away at some of the feral bits of the garden. I now have several large piles of branches and cuttings. Only 9 months 'til the next council pickup :-)

I've decided my intolerance to preservatives is in my favour when it comes to choosing companions for the post-apocalyptic period. I won't put a dent in the storehouses of tins, and I'll be highly motivated to locate and grow fresh food. Once I get past that awkward bunker phase.

Urg. not fun :-(

Have you tried any of the local bacon producers who may use less preservatives? Ask M as he buys them often.

I did get that one lonely rasher from my butcher who's attached to a farm in Margaret River (they do organic free range eggs too), so there's probably less preservative in their bacon than in the supermarket packaged varieties. But I think the smoking process itself may be a big part of the problem.

It's certainly worth additional research!

Might be worth trying organic bacon - if you can manage to find the damn stuff. They are not allowed to use preservatives, yay. There was an organic butcher in the corner of Fremantle markets but I think they have stopped now. Organic bacon has a different flavour to the regular kind, but is still yummo.
