New Moon by Stephenie Meyer
Nov. 18th, 2009 10:24 pmSo, here we are, post-Twilight. New Moon by Stephenie Meyer is a great thumping doorstop of a book, but its looks are deceiving: it's in very large, well-spaced type, and it's an easy read so it passed mercifully quickly. I'm already about a third of the way into the sequal Eclipse so I might get a bit blurry about what happens when.

Easy Virtue
Oct. 24th, 2009 10:59 pmTake Noel Coward, add a modern Australian screenwiter or two and a seriously good cast, and you've got Easy Virtue. ( Minor spoilers )
Today as a birthday treat I took Husband (47 today) to see Pixar's latest Up at the cinema. And for the first time this century I allowed myself to watch a full length modern feature in 3D*. It cost $39 for the two of us, which was a bit of a shock to the system, and I got a crick in my neck and squashed ears. But I say it was worth it.

Rogue Wolf
Oct. 17th, 2009 04:44 pmPerth radio listeners will be familiar with a long-running advertisement for a packing and moving company called "Rogue Wolf". I have... issues with it. ( This has been simmering for a while )
Tonight's viewing pleasure came courtesy of Frank Miller: 300. I came for the art design and abs, and stayed for the surprising revelation that the film didn't entirely suck. It grew on me.

Monsters vs Aliens
Oct. 9th, 2009 10:47 pmWe haven't had a great deal of luck with animated features recently, so my expectations were low when I grabbed Monsters vs Aliens. However, since I'd hired it for free on the back of a phone credit purchase, there was nothing to lose.

Horn spotting with Peter M. Ball
Oct. 8th, 2009 11:21 pmI'm not keen on urban fantasy. I'm positively sick to death of lesbian characters*. I number film noir amongst my least favourite film genres. It irritates me when characters I'm supposed to like drink too much. I usually pass on the unicorn snuff porn. So I really shouldn't have liked--or even gone near--the novella Horn by Peter M. Ball.

Moon Flights by Elizabeth Moon
Oct. 6th, 2009 10:57 pmToday I finally finished the anthology Moon Flights by Elizabeth Moon. I say "finally" because it was sadly uncompelling, and it took longer than it should to get through it. More than once I did the how-many-pages-are-left flick forward, and there was one story I couldn't bring myself to finish. To call this a disappointment would be something of an understatement, because I am terribly keen on Elizabeth Moon and her work. (Remember my review disclaimer - I am expressing a personal opinion here, not an independent assessment.)

Robocop was an awesome film, full of drama, passion, humour, action and moral lessons. Igor, an animated Tim Burton/Pixar wannabe, was not.

They killed the bunny*!
Sep. 12th, 2009 10:52 pmSo, it's done. We've seen The Damned, and in one of those mildly kinked bits of fate, I liked it much more than did Husband, although I may have nightmares about young Oliver Reed for the next week. ( Read more... )
Rebel Without An Orange Of The Damned
Sep. 11th, 2009 11:28 pmHusband is very excited at the prospect of tomorrow night's film on ABC2: The Damned (1963) aka These Are The Damned. ( Read more... )
Star Trek: Nemesis
Sep. 5th, 2009 11:27 pmAnd so we come to the end of the ST schedule with Star Trek: Nemesis. Actually, saw it yesterday but have had laptop trauma which has delayed the report. This will be brief. Maybe.

Star Trek: Insurrection
Aug. 29th, 2009 10:50 pmAfter something of a delay we've resumed the Trek-fest with Star Trek: Insurrection. I *distinctly* remembered seeing this in the cinema; crushing disappointment on that scale is something that tends to stick in the mind.

Space & stuff
Aug. 22nd, 2009 11:23 pmIn lieu of knocking off the last two Star Trek movies (for which the completist in me is itching) tonight we watched Marooned (1969), a classic lifeboat thriller, set in space. There are three men, but probably only enough oxygen for two... That wasn't a spoiler, merely a very very accurate guess in the opening credits.

Pepy's diary it isn't, but I just unearthed another early pre-blog effort recorded not with words, but deciphered from a few bones, tools and burial mounds. Good thing the OCR on my printer was up to the task of translation or I'd have been typing all night.
