Data Insecurity
Mar. 16th, 2010 10:46 pmWas pleased to make it along to tonight's ACS meeting on the subject of data security and why people are untrustworthy in more ways than I had previously imagined. Mmmmmmm. Skullduggery. Some nifty tips on hard disk security, which unfortunately due to the ethical requirements of my profession I cannot share with you. Also learned something about the murky borders between legal and illegal activities.

I feel very inspired by the Square Kilometre Array and have decided to educate myself further on the subject. I am required to collect professional development points every year to maintain my ACS certification and this will take care of a goodly chunk o' that. The current working title of what will probably be a Powerpoint presentation to myself is:
The Digital Logistics of Astrophysics: A guide fordummies those who lack the good taste to have studied the relevant subjects at graduate level.
Catchy, eh? And possibly a billion parsecs from where it's going to end up. I could be horribly abusing the whole school of astrophysics, for which I apologise in advance. I start from a position of humble ignorance.

Space is big, and needs a lot of storage
Feb. 16th, 2010 11:44 pmI was teeth-grittingly determined to make it to tonight's ACS meeting, so while I achieved nothing else today, I did get there to hear about the Square Kilometre Array and sundry side organisations and projects.

More milestones!
Nov. 4th, 2009 11:05 pmI woke up very early today, so got to work at the crack of nothing, did three solid hours, then went home, had a nap, ate celery, and then went back to work for another 2 hours 20 min!.
*happy noises*
This is an important stage in increasing my working hours, becaus it looks like 3 hours is my absolute limit sitting at a desk, no matter how creative the furniture.

Made it out, and almost back
Jul. 21st, 2009 08:25 pmToday was my first day back at try-to-work, and while there were no spoons to be had during the day, I did pull all remaining resources into bathing, dressing and driving to tonight's ACS meeting.

Out of the blue
Mar. 12th, 2009 06:07 pmI have been asked to speak at a local software engineering conference on risk managment. ( Read more... )
I will not be attending the first ACS meeting of the year this afternoon, which is extremely disappointing. I need the PD points, it's about collecting PD points, and I need ideas for collecting PD points this year. Aarrgh.
Extremely bad state today, including fatigue from breathing. Lots of muscles involved in breathing. Glasses of water are also very heavy again.
I sense a flocked post with lots of swearing lies in my immediate future >:-[

Going down
Nov. 18th, 2008 08:47 pmAs I understand time travel, LJ is due to go down in about 5 hours time. Could be out for 4 hours, could be more. Could be fatal.
*hyperventilates*
So, this could be my last post ever, and I have neglected to find an acceptable method of offline backup for my journal, not that I've looked recently. So, this could be it. Oblivion. How did I spend my last couple of days of blogdom?

Reward and Punishment
Jul. 17th, 2008 10:43 pmNow on the far side of my ACS talks (details still forthcoming, if I ever get around to it) I decided to let the beige off the leash a little.

Performance art
Jul. 14th, 2008 11:06 pmTomorrow I deliver my Tech Writer talk to the ACS. Like an exam this has been hovering on the calendar for quite some time, but unlike an exam I'm really looking forward to it. Most of my dumb things to say are scripted in advance, so I hope my energy levels will pick up enough to last me the rest of the night with some dignity. Then Wednesday to Bunbury and back for round II and I can relax a bit. Not that I'm stressed now, but after a while you just want even the nicest events to just be over.

On networking
May. 20th, 2008 09:47 pmI have been professionally developed via the magic of an ACS seminar on networking, followed by some networking. Pre-performance thoughts here: http://stephbg.livejournal.com/183076.html

This may be a bit incoherent. I've needed to treat the inflamed nerve in my neck/arm and it's starting to kick in.

I hope (or perhaps more accurately fear) to go to the ACS professional development session tomorrow night, for the subject is networking, with the threat of practical exercises. That would be *talking* to people, presumably at some point about me. Which (lj evidence in the thousands of words to the contrary) I dislike intensely.
