Acquired word for word from [livejournal.com profile] callistra

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. (Some I know too well. ha!) I read your journals, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips." (Think of it as your Christmas present to me! lol)

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear.

As a child, I hated Inspector Gadget yet couldn't stop watching it every weeknight before Doctor Who.

It was actually you who introduced me to the "Sisters of Mercy" (whilst chatting and walking to Unisfa) and therefore along with Tamara, can reasonably be identified as the major causal agents that launched me into the alt/goth scene.

Well done Grasshopper, the Student has excelled over the Master.

Well, given the contents of the post following this one, I feel obliged to admit that my most watched DVD is quite possibly Beavis and Butthead Do America. I first viewed said erudite production the night before my first trip to the US, under the guise of "cultural research". Oh yes.

I've since seen Loth Vegath and the Hoover Dam ("Is that a god dam?"), but have yet to reach WASHINGTON. Unless you count the one just down the road from Newcastle upon Tyne.

Heaven forbid I should comment unfavourably on the entertainment choices of others!

However, if you enjoyed it I'm happy to claim familial credit :-)

well, you didn't say it had to be something that you didn't know...

bonus, then: I did my honours thesis on the patterns of illegal flows of people across Chinese borders. I hope to one day do my phd on the same topic.

When I was 10, I was on a Qantas flight that very nearly crashed. I thought it was really cool because we were all weightless and I had to hook my arms under the armrests to keep myself in my seat. My brothers rug floated around the cabin like a ghost. I turned around to look at my parents, and my dad was saying to my mum "If we're going to go, at least we are all going together." I realised that I was about to die and I was not afraid. I have never been afraid of my death since.

It was over Yugoslavia, on the way from London to Beirut. The bonus was, after the emergency landing and overnight stay, we were flown home first class.

from age <6 I was convinced I was going to be a vet. I have no idea how I even knew what a vet was at that age, as I have no memory of any animal ownership prior to bantams that arrived when I was 6, but such are the vagaries of things that you can't talk children out of, that I remained convinced up to the point that I was enrolled in vet. Six weeks into semester, other things conspired to cause me to drop out, and lack of conviction that it was the right thing to do caused me to not go back the following year, despite the polite letter inviting me to do so.
