Experiments: Multi-focus merge

Haven't really felt up to playing with either rocks or rock pictures, but I wanted to have a try at merging two shots with different depth of focus to create a single image with the maximum amount possible in focus. i.e. overcome the greatest weakness of both my camera and microscope shots, which is very shallow depth of focus.
Obviously this is nothing new in the world of photography and image manipulation, but it's all pretty new to me and I'm enjoying re-inventing the wheel :-)
For a quickie test I remembered I had two similar-ish microscope shots of a cat-shaped object in rhyolite:

Tonight I had a quick bash at merging the two. I made it harder for myself because the two source images weren't identical in size or orientation, but I need as much basic skills practice as I can get. My Apprentice will attest to the fact that I like to squeeze as many lessons out of a single exercise as possible :-)
This is what I did tonight:

For further comparison, this is how the feature looked using the camera:

I'm too tired now to bother with really making the edges of the two blend seamlessly (at full scale it's as rough as guts), but for a proof of concept I think it's OK. Will it blend? Yes it will
I'm still working on PSP9 but I expect PSPX3 any day now. I know the interface is quite different, but I'm pretty relaxed at the idea of upgrading. Although I'm remembering a lot of handy keyboard shortcuts now I won't be too upset if they've all changed. As a tech writer one learns not to become too attached to a particular version of (or one's skills in using) anything :-)
