stephbgNot today, and certainly not now after I've taken the drugs I appear to have taken this evening. However, did eavesdrop on some dialogue in my head and I'm pleased to learn that a character I'd previously thought of as mainly an incompetent obstacle with notions of empire building, paranoia, and defensiveness might just step up to the plate to be a bit evil too. He's got a bit of blackmail on his side to have kept and promoted him long past the value of his actual skills. That would be nice, and as a bonus, would explain a few other things too.
I am terribly keen to understand the motivations of characters and the circumstances that got them into (and thence out of) situations, and hopefully that will show up in my work. In an elegant and entertaining way. That would be nice too.
Yunno, I think this might even qualify as a NaNo post :-)
I hope people aren't finding these posts about writing too dull. They are a record of the lessons that I am learning as I work through this process for the first time. In my experience such lessons need to be consolidated. I don't pretend to have insights to share with any one else--I lay no claim to guruhood or even the competance to teach--but I'm finding that sharing these insights with myself is very useful.

Date: 2010-11-06 02:31 am (UTC)Know what you mean about "the drugs I appear to have taken." There've been times when I too have had to assess my current condition and from that work out whether I took the damn pill or not! [Because doubling up would be worse].
If characters take over from you, that can be a good sign. I'm doing Nano myself - obviously not right this second, must remedy - and now that I've belted WA with a series of disasters, i.e. bombings, a pandemic = general power failures and chaos, I've got a character in Germany who wants to come over and join his boyfriend, but there are no planes arriving here. So I don't know what he's going to do but he's pretty determined, and things aren't pretty in his neck of the woods either. Guess I'll find out.
