An apology in advance

stephbgAussiecon4 aka Worldcon aka The World Science Fiction Convention starts in the fair city Melbourne in about two weeks from now. Many of my peeps are going, but some like me will be left behind on the other side of the island :-(
To the people going: I hope you have a great time, see wonderous things, share witty and intelligent insights with superbly interesting people. May you eat, drink, and party well, and may your hotel rooms offer the peace and consolation of rest as required. Or Other Things as opportunities arise ;-)
Many of you are participating in the programme, volunteering, or have been hard at work organising the whole shebang for I don't know how many years. You have my thanks and I hope it all works out. May your artwork hang sweetly, your costumes inspire, and may requests for autographs pass your lips with elegance and coherence.
To the writers, editors, publishers and agents I wish you too a fruitful time. If your desire is to prop up the bar, so be it; drink and be merry and don't hit your head on the way to the floor. But if you have books to launch, reputations to build or maintain, a manuscript seeking a home, or a client to convince, may all these things happen for you.
May games be played, may plastic spacemen and t-shirts and furry paraphenalia be sold. May mysterious rites be renewed, awards presented, tears shed, unspeakable filk be sung.
However...
I'm not going, and this makes me more than a little sad, particularly as the happy anticipation begins to build amongst the attendees. You go right ahead and anticipate happily; it is your right.
I and those of us who will be left behind hope to comfort each other, if we can get ourselves organised.
My apology is this: If in the course of managing my disappointment things turn a little ugly, shall we say, I am sorry. Should I become bitter and spiteful, I am sorry. Should I break into your homes knowing full well that you are away and hide one of your favourite socks perhaps, or set a rat amongst your mysteriously jam-coated and once priceless collection of Daleks, well so be it. You were warned.
Please think of me while you're gone.
