A couple of days ago I was asked to speak to the ACS-Women's group at their monthly meeting. I struggled to come up with an appropriate topic, and one which I could pull together in just two weeks. Many thanks for all the people who commented and passed on suggestions.

I was struggling to come up with a suitably feminist topic, but then remembered I had done some work on a Communication Risk Management in Requirements Engineering seminar presentation last year. Communication risks are risks for every one, and easily slanted as possibly more female or male (if neccessy).

It was harder than I expected to find the PPT file itself - scarily I had to dig it out of an Outlook archive. Unfortunately that presentation was too rough to just take a chunk. No narrative. Lots of good ideas which the organisers were very keen on, so I'll try and pick and choose the strongest bits. Perhaps I'll ask the audience questions too.

Current state of play is that I will open with the "I can't talk about Womens issues - it's too hard" stuff from the post, then go into general communication risks, and I'll do my best to think up actual anecdotes. I won't try too hard to make the length (question time is likely to be vigorous I believe), so I'll take directions. I'll have to talk off dot points rather than my preferred approach of having a beginning-middle-end narrative.

So yes, somewhere this afternoon I e-mailed to accept the gig. I'm hoping I'll be able to meet the eyes of my audience, rather than just work through a completely polished script. Clumsy links won't kill me. Less than perfect slides wont kill me. Probably.

Much too tired to write coherently now. Hopefully this will improve over the next week or two.
