For [livejournal.com profile] gemfyre, an old street map of Perth around the area of the proposed Stephenson Highway. Amusing if you're familiar with the modern Osborne Park area. Dated late 60s/early 70s. It should be possible to pin down a publication date if necessary.

That's really interesting:-) I'd forgotten that La Grange didn't go through, and that Hertha did:-)

And our house would have still been in Woodlands—even though I have the paperwork from about 10 years ago when it changed suburb _to_ woodlands!

Lots of things that are just a little bit different:-)

I'm sure there are now plenty of people that don't even remember Odin Rd connecting to Erindale Rd (or hand-lettered street directories, for that matter). :P

I _had_ forgotten that it connected:-) But that was why Odin Rd was so busy when we went to cross it before and after school:-)

We've had this conversation before:-) You were scanning photos the night before your wedding? Including first communion photos... the sign at the front (and the jungle gym in the background) were a giveaway:-)

Oh, and if you liked the 1970's map, you've love the 1947 street directory I stumbled across (and immediately snaffled) a couple of years ago.

Oh neat.

Haha, I'm a young'n. I remember when Reid Highway didn't exist, and when they built the Tonkin Highway/Walter Rd overpass.

Ooh, that's really interesting. Does the yellow shading indicate paved roads? My parents' place is marked out and unshaded, and I know it wasn't bitumenised (sic?) until the late 50s at the earliest.

I believe so.

If only Nearmap was invented 70 years or so ago. :P

Only in a manner of speaking, I'm sure! On the ground, my dad may well have been there first:-)

You have a point. I was only referring to the viewing of the map. Where did your parents live when they first got married? Are they still there?

No where on _these_ maps!

They first lived in Konnongorring... which pretty much didn't exist once they left... Dad closed a number of school's.
Then they lived near emma_in_oz's folks, before going to the house we lived in for most of our childhood. They moved from there a couple of years ago.

I didn't realise the Freeway (up to Hutton Street) was so young! I guess I had assumed that it was built around the same time as the Narrows. I suppose it serves as another reminder of how rapidly the city is growing.

That is such a cool thing to find! I love old maps for the history they store. Must be the geographer in me :-)

I can't find a date, but it's a UBD 4th edition with an ISBN so it should be possible to find out. I grew up with it but I'm quite curious now :-)
