I went looking on ebay for a cheap compatible laptop that I might scavenge for parts to fix this one, but I came across an allegedly compatible inverter that looks approximately like the thing I think I need. For the total sum of $16 (including insurance) and I suspect a lengthy wait from Hong Kong, I'll give this a go.

*shakes fist at the universe* You haven't defeated me yet!

BTW I'm writing this on the sick laptop in question, which has temporarily decided to work. Easy come, easy go. It's better for my neck than peering at the CRT sitting on a chair nearby.

A dumb thought

Do you have a loupe or a high-gain magnifying glass? If so, consider inspecting the back of the circuit board of the inverter (if visible).

The more you're describing it, the more it sounds like a fractured solder joint. Or a dry electrolytic capacitor. The former is easy to fix, the latter harder to identify.

Doesn't sound like a dumb thought at all.

Is the fractured solder joint of which you speak the same as a dry joint? I had that as an intermitent fault in a TV once that always got worse in hot weather. Couldn't find anyone willing to repair that either, but did get a replacement board.
