Where next for laptop help?

Hi folks. My Dell laptop inverter seems to have gone permanently dark, and while I'd like to just throw up my hands and buy a new one, I'm making some sort of effort to get it fixed. (Right now I'm squinting across the room at the output on the TV. This means we can't browse the internet and watch TV at the same time. It's shockingly primitive here at Sector 7.)
Dell seem to encourage the throw-up-your-hands-and-get-a-new-one attitude: I completely failed to navigate their website to find either parts or service to assist. The local computer shop had two responses to the question of whether they could fix it. On Thursday the answer was Yes. On Friday the answer was No.
My Dad can't do it. The computer guy he uses can't do it. I'm not trying to get this done for free by friend or co-worker, but where do I go Rhett? What will I do?
i.e. any recs for a northern suburbs laptop repair service person or place?
