I visited the local RDA branch today to get the next step in volunteering underway. My application for a Working With Children card has now been signed by the secretary, and I've been to the post office to be formally identified and--joy of joys--photographed for my new ID. It seems like a reasonably large co-incidence that the man in front of me in the post office queue was doing exactly the same thing.

I now have the next round of application forms in hand, and once complete I can submit those and go on to the next stage in induction. I was told to not worry about the referee section. One day I must get around to cashing in on my honest face and start that life of crime.

I've had the basic tour of the premises and got to meet some of the people and some of the horses. Had some quality over-the-stall-door horse contact; soon it will be the real thing *boing boing boing*. I got satisfyingly dirty in a good clean horsey way.

The people I've spoken to seem more than willing to accommodate my unpredictable nature. Apparently there's a shortage of people willing or able to work in the afternoons, so my availability then went down very well.

I think I might have been a little *too* aware of my own ignorance however; I may have overwhelmed people by rattling off my assumed training to-do list. I need to get to know the facilities, the horses, the people, the routine, the schedule, the rules, the skills.... OK, I'm a nut. Note to self: I do not need to internalise the entire site body of knowledge to be a volunteer stablehand.

But it wouldn't hurt.

The universe did signal its approval by delivering a book I'd ordered on horse body language and psychology.
