I've been reading friends' renderings of this meme with interest, but avoided doing it myself mainly because my memory is just not organised for this kind of annual reporting. I'm prone to overlook really big ticket items which could prove embarrassing. The obvious solution of reading 12 months of my own blog as research is too hideous to contemplate, so in lieu of research I thought I'd just give it a go.

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Be on the Swancon committee. Have a whole bunch of medical tests. See a picture of my brain. Played Pirate Cove.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Overall, pretty much yes, and within a broad definition of the term "resolutions", yes.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My cousin R snuck in (or rather out) Eva on Christmas Day.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
MIL, Aunt-in-law, plus a frightening number of my parents' generation of family and friends, plus a few younger people to heart attack and cancer. Bang bang bang. Not all strictly close to me, but it seemed like a constant barrage.

5. What countries did you visit?
Paradise AND Me. Other than that I failed to breach any international borders.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Greater productivity. Energy. Wellness. Muscles.

7. What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The calendar doesn't really register, but I'd rather the six weeks of reliving BB's decline and all the other crap that happened in September/October didn't happen.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Clawing back from the brink.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Being in the brink.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Just a tad. Anyone who's read my blog suffered along with me.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Ceiling fan for the bedroom. Drainage for the house. A red panda hand puppet. Plasticine.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
This is where I get vague. Lots of people. Frequently. Husband deserves a lot of kudos for a(nother) year of support under pressure, and for taking on the human communication duties at Swancon while I swore at my own software.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Mine. Anyone who vomited on my doona. Certain disorganised people. The bosses of certain people.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Mortgage, doctors, books.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Planning for, running, and surviving the Swancon art show. If nothing else it was an *intense* experience.

16. What song will always remind you of 2009?
"Click Go The Shears". No wait, that was 2008.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? Happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? About the same, but this included losing and regaining about 10kg
iii. richer or poorer? I was going to say poorer, but the latest batch of blood money possibly tipped things over into richer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
EVERYTHING! With the possible exception of visits to the doctor and sundry medical professionals.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Waste f&^#ing time being sick and not realising I was much much more depressed than I thought.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
2009 was the trad family bring-a-plate BBQ at my middle sister's place. Christmas 2008 was a dreadful day spent just wanting Boxing Day to be over, so 2009 was a significant improvement, if less rowdy in the absence of BB.

21. What LJ users did you meet for the first time?
See, this is where I'll just get myself into trouble. I linked up a few names, faces, identities and lj usernames with "Oh it's you!" moments, but it would be hard to say who I met.

22. Did you fall in love in 2009?
Every day

23. How many one-night stands?
*snort*

24. What was your favorite TV program?

The Big Bang Theory (thank you [livejournal.com profile] mikey_ob!). Lie To Me. So You Think You Can Dance (US). Le Tour, rather to my surprise. Star Trek TOS (only seasons 1-2 mind you). David Attenborough DVDs.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I may occasionally want to kill people, but I don't really do hate. Except maybe Troy Buswell, but there's a good chance I hated him this time last year as well, but for different reasons.

26. What was the best book you read?
Not Twilight that's for sure. Possibly Gone With The Wind (but I'm not even sure that was 2009). I'd have to search the LJ archive for tag=books but even then I don't mention all of them.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Petrushka chord.

28. What did you want and get?
A measure of recovery.

29. What did you want and not get?
More recovery. Lots more recovery.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Star Trek

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
39, and I'd have to look it up.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being functional. That's just one thing, right?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
A pathetic descent into shabby yet comfortable trakkie pant hell. I wish I could stay the same bloody size for more than five minutes at a time.

34. What kept you sane?
Ha. If I'd started, experienced or finished the year sane the answer would have been LJ, Husband, and fluoxetine.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Husband. Otherwise need to search the lj archive for "phwoar".

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Troy Buswell slashing budgets here there and everywhere just so he could claim the personal glory of a budget surplus. Grrrrr.

37. Who did you miss?
David Michael Graham.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I think baby Jadzia probably did the best job of being a new person.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009.
Sometimes you need to acknowledge the possibility of defeat before you can begin to claim victory.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
I will survive.
