There's a Stargate-shaped hole* in my fannish viewing. I watched the movie in 1994 (OMG 15 years ago?) and remember being disappointed. I failed to bond with any of the characters except the yak. A decade and a half later even the yak is getting fuzzy**.

When the TV show first aired I saw a couple of episodes, which was enough to establish that the series was better than the movie. However, I was working and studying and had to sacrifice viewing time. I chose to cut Stargate in its entirety. After a couple of years it seemed too late to catch up, so I never bothered. The broadcast schedule was also discouragingly flexible, and occasionally fictional.

Despite not actually watching it I've kept a strange mutant eyeball on the whole business through fanfic (not so much reading it as reading about it) and general discussion amongst friends. You can also learn a lot about a show by watching all the episode promos, if not the episodes themselves.

When John Scalzi announced that he would be creative consultant on the new series Stargate: VoyagerUniverse I thought that might give me an opportunity to get involved again, but I had to wait for television to do its thang. Which it did tonight, and which I recorded whilst having a bath then watching a history of American Slapstick with Husband.

Anywho, reactions online to the new series seem to be unenthused at best. What thinkest thou, friends? I will try to watch it in the next couple of days before I fly to Adelaide.

(*) Which seems curiously appropriate.

(**) Which also seems curiously appropriate.
