Today's outing involved a trip to King's Park, to visit the transplanted boab tree. It took a *little* longer to get there than expected, for I thought the freeway would be open to traffic at 1:00pm. I was wrong :-(

So thanks to some athletic event, we got to crawl along the freeway at 1:30pm on Sunday afternoon at peak hour rates, shaking fists at people using the emergency lane for suspected non-emergency purposes. Thank heavens for air conditioning. I suppose it might have been worse: our original plan had us leaving at 1pm, but we finished watching the Hammer movie Curse of the Werewolf before we left. More Oliver Reed intensity. That dude needed to chill a little.

Kings Park threw up another little surprise when we got there, with some interesting road works and detours in place, plus full carparks and many cruising vehicles. But it's a big place and we found a spot in a surprisingly empty car park.

To the boab! It's very large, and does not yet display signs of life. That's about all I can say, but I was happy to see it. We wandered down to the elevated walkway and steel bridge, peering at the river views and wildflowers along the way. Nice river.

When the walkway first opened I remember feeling distinctly underwhelmed: it suffered in comparison with the Valley of the Giants near Walpole which I'd seen not long before. However, it's been a while and I was pleasantly surprised to find that part of King's Park much more impressive than expected. It's a good old park really, and I'm very fond of it.

Please don't set my park on fire.

We weren't there for a serious hike so just swung back through the water garden, dodging wedding after wedding, and pitying the poor harpist struggling up the hill with her gear. We lay on the grass for a while, watching ducks and sundry bush birdies graze, bathe, and chill. On the way back to the car we saw ducklings (or "snacks"), so the wildlife quota was satisfied.

Escaping our miraculous parking space was a trifle more complicated than expected due to building works, and then we cruised the internal roads for quite a while to escape the park proper. There were one or two people out in the playground today. Possibly three.

I must go to the DNA tower sometime soon. I have a vague feeling I was still at uni the last time I climbed it.

In technology news I did get my router working, but I couldn't change the default security settings. I have a number of things to try, but it feels terribly exposed so I'm not using it yet. There's also the problem that I've been on dialup speeds for several days now, and the router is more aggressive about signal strength requirements than the modem. I shouldn't be being shaped, but I haven't yet tried it in a different location. I have no reason to believe it's anything other than 3 providing lousy service. Except perhaps the old abandoned uranium mine under the washing line.

I like wandering around that part of Kings Park.
The boab trees all had a few leaves on during winter. They seem to go dormant over summer.
