I haven't sculpted for a while, so I recently picked up some plasticine to play with, and use some neglected bits of my brain. Despite my intentions to stick with abstract blobs and avoid embarrassing comparisons with reality, I appear to have made a horse's head:

Of course, it's a work in progress (which is the point of the medium after all), and the photo sucks, but I'm finding that my fingers are too big to get the amount of detail and musculature that I think I'm capable of. So I'm thinking of going bigger. Not Christo sized, but kind of Femmeconne Beastie size, in a medium that's multiple-session and tinker-friendly, but can eventually be hardened when I'm good and ready. (Ha!)

Husband's getting modelling tools for my birthday. Any tips for materials? I'm aware that I'll need to make a hollow form of some sort to start with. Exploding Things is a different project entirely :-)

If it was Christo sized you would have to find a large paper bag and some string for it too and then it would hide all your hard work. ;)

I thought he used plastic wrap? Or did Christo go eco-friendly?

He used different stuff, fabric, polypropelene... Not paper though but thought that would go better with your horse for some reason. :)

I reserve paper bags for my own head ;-)

Just hold back on the string then. :)

Air drying clay is relatively cheap and doesn't require a kiln. Breaks very easily though. Otherwise there's fimo/sculpey.

Has a very epic horse look, like something you'd expect to see in some European square.

Or something that should be called Bucephalus or something.

I really like how you did the cheek/jowl(?) area. It really adds to the look!

That is startlingly lifelike and just beautiful!

Perhaps if you made it about shoebox sized? Would that help?
