Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

That's more like it! ST II looked and felt much more like a ST movie than a desperate overfunded scriptless mishmash of shots. Shatner still reasonably trim, but the wig now has a perm that is quite terrifying. No Space Bikinis* :-( but it was fun.
Quite a few more references here for the recent movie, so my love for that only grows.
What a gloriously silly bad guy Ricardo Montalban played. So much for the massive IQ, if you're going to fall to bits at the first sign of defiance.
Always nice to have a submarine chase, but the Romulans did it better.
Further distractions in trying to remember if the Lady Doctor and mother of Kirk's son was in a fact a specific former old Space Girlfriend from the series. My best guess was from "Court Martial" but no.
The redshirt who got himself killed in the caverns was so unobtrusive we had to rewind to see where he'd even entered the scene.
Spock got to be more like himself on the journey so it recaptured some of the camerarderie of the series. The he had to turn himself into a Spock Plug to restart warp drive. If I were Jim I'd have cried more.
Uhura lost the afro from ST I which was nice and scored better hair, although not as good as in the early TV. Uniforms also better fit; less embarrasing body hair here and there, although sone David looked ready for tennis.
I'm a bit dizzy now so may have to come back to address rational points
Beware James Horner's special feature on the nusic. He's a self-aggrandising wanker.
Could have done without the biblical references but give Gene's obsession with god a few had to sneak through.
Am looking forward to the III Search for Spock to continue the sprint to IV The Whale One, then pause and prepare ourselves for V and VI
(*) Unless, of course, you count Khan's costume and prosthetic chest. It kept me distracted for a bit wondering if it was supposed to be skin or body armour, and then I saw an unconvincing prosthetic nipple.

Date: 2009-07-20 01:22 am (UTC)I think Wrath of Khan is probably the best of the Trek movies. The Undiscovered Country is my second-favourite.
