Another very slow start to today, but I tried to get things going by listening to a podcast whilst doing some cleaning. I normally find this tremendously satisfying, but not today. I brought in some washing, but felt no sense of achievement. The penny dropped: the broccoli had not only made me horribly itchy, but it was probably responsible for a minor dose of clinical depression.
Somewhere around here I wrote about 400 words worth of outline for my new WIP short story. I also spent some time setting up the authoring software I'm using, which I'm confident will make it easier to write scenes in random order. It feels like a Big Thing to me, and in some ways I'm quite nervous. I know what I like; I'm quite comfortable critiquing narrative, structure, prose, character, and dialogue; but officially putting my money where my mouth is (or my foot where my mouth is) is quite a leap.
I thought I'd treat myself to some caffeine, but this requires company, so I summoned spoons and went to visit my sister and three nieces. It's a nice break from social awkwardness to be able to accept a cup of coffee :-) This was also on my happy list of things to do on my "holiday" so I scored the added bonus of a tick. Insert bug joke here.
I took along a couple of Scalzi's books for some holiday reading, and tried to have a sensible discussion with the hopelessly Twilight-addicted Middle Niece. I'm not sure if I made an impression, but I can try to expose her to different influences, and make sure she understands that such shiny godlike super perfection is not to be found in life. She has two T posters in her room, and was horrified--with added squealing--by the idea of a "Buffy Stakes Edward" t-shirt. Ah well, I'd rather have an enthusiastic teen than a mopey one.
Eldest Niece went to Supanova for a bit so she told me about that, and we had a chat about cosplay do's and don'ts, exam technique, the impact of war on society, and wii. Hopefully I'll get her to Swancon next year. Awesome. Youngest Niece isn't really into conversation but we managed some freestyle hugging action involving smelly armpits. You had to be there.
For the first time in a long time I gave Middle Sister a bit of scalp and neck massage. It felt good to be able to do that again, and it made her go very quiet very quickly :-)
BIL is in England with his Dad so the household eostrogen was thick in the air, but it was a lovely visit. I keep up with Middle Sister on the phone, but it had been too long since the last extended niece chat.
Alone tonight: Husband is off big banding. Well, I'm never alone with the cats, and of course my invisible internet friends. *loves you all*
