As planned, Husband and I made it out of the house by 10AM today (Sunday) to go to Freo first to visit the antiques and collectables fair, and then to the military tunnel complex. That's early on the BG clock for a Sunday.

It was a fair distribution of spousal boredom - Husband got to flick through old sheet music and books then park himself with a styrofoam coffee while I spent much longer looking at porcelain and glass (not much wood unfortunately). I bought a fabric fan for $6 rather than the $8 ticket price (had to have a go, offered $5 to start), and a pair of Japanese enamelled porcelain goblets for $40. The ticket price $45 and I should have gone in harder becaue the owner accepted the first $40 bid straight away. Doh.

I was lucky to find anything pretty and affordable, as I have developed inconveniently expensive taste and an eye for quality workmanship a la Moorcroft, Lalique et al. Damn you Antiques Roadshow! How can I go back to being a flower girl now you've edumacated me in the finer things? Last night's lotto numbers were incorrect again and I only work part time!

In turn I found an hour of local "nothing happened but we were ready" military history tourism in the tunnels and gun emplacements in Mosman Park interesting only in small and scattered patches and was frankly distracted by my sore feet, while Husband enjoyed the tour more thoroughly. A sponge for history that boy.

There was some entertainment value in the 7 small children under the what I will mockingly term "supervision" of a single male adult. They were energetic and mildly obnoxious but fortunately not wantonly destructive. The girls wore cute socks. One of the boys (about 7 or 8?) was a scardy cat and clung to their guardian, making howling noises of fear should he ever lose sight of him. There were apparently four more children at home. I can only assume multiple Brady syndrome.

Still, it was a scheduled and successful outing and had the same spirit as the kind of stuff we do when we're on holiday, so it felt like time away from the world.
