An open letter

Dear 2009



I understand that it is human to desire a break from misfortune and interesting times, and I make no apologies for having great expectations of you as a year, even though you are only an hour old. You've *got* to be better than your predecessor, right?

But people also seem to expect that birthdays, Christmas and other special days will be somehow better than average, and immune from disaster. Such an attitude leads only to greater despair when accidents or unfortunate events occur at natural frequencies.

What I'm trying to say is that, while I'd really really like 2009 to be free of trouble and heartache, that's a lot of statistical pressure to put on a sequence of 365 days (+1 second). It won't--it can't--all be smooth sailing, so I shall have to deal with whatever comes, as will those I love and respect.

Nah, screw that sensible healthy psychology bulls#&t. 2009? Be nice to everybody*, m'kay?

Nah, be *especially* nice to them. Drive the sods mad by doing that. (evil grin)

I hope that 2009 is better than last year for you and yours. That, at least, is a possibility.
