This morning Husband and I took the car, trains, and feet to Freo to meet up with LBS and Partner of LBS (PoLBS). This was my first meeting with PoLBS, so naturally we rendezvous'd (???) at the prison.

We Did The Tour ("Doing Time"), and Husband provided an extra commentary track as he was off duty. The guide knew his stuff, but I found his delivery a bit flat, rather like a verbal bulleted list. Since we were his first of six 1 1/4 hour tours that day he might have been pacing himself a bit. It was a nearly full group, and all the Tunnel Tours were booked out. The post Christmas period is apparently very popular.

It's only 19-21C down the tunnels but it is very humid and you have to wear a paper jumpsuit, rubber boots, safety headgear, and dangly bits of hardware. Somewhat like the dress code at a Devo concert.

After the tour we went for a wander down to the fishing boat harbour and a light lunch at Kailis'. We were all disappointed at the much reduced fresh seafood section, which now only occupies a small corner. I like fish markets. Ones with refrigeration at any rate. We spent a bit of time at the statue of Bon Scott, where Husband did his tour-guide thing. For lunch I snacked on a bag of raw green beans. Portable, tasty and beige, but on the face of it, very wierd.

Let's see... we walked along a groin, under or indeed through the whaling tunnel and then up and over to The Roundhouse just in time for the 1:00PM firing of the cannon. The seabreeze had come in by then (THANK YOU SEA BREEZE) and we were advised (by the voice of experience) that explosive residue might blow back on the crowd and stick to the skin, which would subsequently trigger interesting alarms and brisk personal procedures at the airport. Cool.

It was surprisingly empty on the streets and beaches. Perhaps everyone was shopping, or lurking in cinemas, or even working.

We then made our way down High Street to admire former pubs and their architecture (and I really must go clothes shopping down there one day - saw many interesting little shops) then trekked back up to the prison carpark for an escort home.

So, quite a lot of traipsing about in non-trivial heat but I managed OK, except that I caught too much sun for the second time in a couple of weeks and am now partially pink. Mostly forearms and face and the odd bit of neckline. Perhaps it's just as well that my plans for 2009 include getting an all-over mole review*.

PoLBS was very pleasant, in an interesting, educated, quiet-but-witty kind of way (reminds me of someone...), and I noted with pleasure that in his company LBS seemed to relax and laugh more, which is excellent. Please continue to do so PoLBS.

(*) No, not a Full Monty for small sightless subterranean mammals.

Oh dear.

Now I want to see an all-over Mole Revue for myself.

the clothes shops on high street are indeed lovely, but they do require a little fortitude, as some of the prices were more than I could accept (I bought my second most expensive piece of clothing ever there - it cost more than my wedding dress, if one deducts the cost of the jewelry that came with said wedding dress)
