I know it's not universal, but is it that unusual? I "hear" when I read personal communication all the time. It's something I advise people to do when working remotely and communicating by e-mail. Helps to bond if you imagine voices, rather than just reading as a visual pattern-matching exercise.

Of course there's a downside of additional risk that the reader will add emotional context not intended by the writer.

I'm more likely to pattern-match business literature or even fiction, and thus read much faster, but I'll convert to voice where required. I could go on...

New to me!

I was reading very early, and words make their own patterns in my brain. More akin to music I think, or pictures - emotional waves I suppose.

I'm the same. But I'm a fairly aural learner - if something is presented visually, I don't take as much in as if I hear it (which means when I'm tired I have to read out loud anything I want to remember).

I think that it is one reason that I don't read very fast (compared to a large number of my friends) - if I go too fast, it is like listening to horse races on the radio.
