If you live in a world without normal human standards of flavour, red lentils (soaked and ever so briefly stir fried with a bit of butter) taste like peppery pumpkin.

I've been avoiding them--who needed another tasteless staple?--but was pleasantly surprised by the experiment. I got me fresh ideas!

If you add some onion sauteed in butter/ghee, you get dahl.

Had a great chat with S about the diet. She has convinced me to give it a go. Then I read your blog posts and feel like I am about to enter the first level of hell. I guess I should write a detailed list of all the crummy physical and mental things that I live with right now, and put it on the fridge.

It's definitely not easy, particularly at the start, but the rewards are great. I'm still learning new things all the time. Granted, the new things I'm learning generally require additional discipline, but I'm now at the point where I can say that my fuzzy head today was probably due to the half packet of scotch fingers I demolished on the weekend. Bad things are much easier to handle if there's a reason for them. I do my best to not beat myself up when I slip or drift - my body does it quite nicely all by itself.

Thanks - that is exactly what S said, too. She explained how feeling crummy now has an obvious cause, and it was therefore a lot easier to deal with because she knows it is temporary and fixable.

*nod nod* I used to get very depressed and frustrated by the whole damn mysteriousness of my illness. I reserve the right to be whiny about the unfairness of it all :P

I keep thinking about trying it as well. I even went so far as to buy a book on it, which you are welcome to borrow. I keep baulking at the 'but how do I keep the kids on it when we are out' issue - because in particular, I worry about eldest.

I admit I've only skimmed passed the "how do you convice your child" parts, but the main messages appear to be that the entire household has to do it, and learn to BYO food. The program was developed with children in mind, so a lot of the book is about treats and managing schools and parties.

Which book did you get? I've got The Failsafe Cookbook by Sue Dengate and Friendly Food. Sue's written several other books about food additives and behaviour and asthma.
