Comment on this post and I will choose seven interests from your profile. You will then explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.
cognitive psychology
Cognitive psychology is the science of human thought, memory, analysis and problem solving. I am simply fascinated by the mechanics and complexity of the mind and its interactions with the world around us and within. I love the way the science is so reliable and yet how different we all are. I love the way the mind is not a machine after all, and takes shortcuts, cheats, and sometimes fails. It's logic, it's the madness of biology, it's in everything we do.
human-computer interaction
My interest in HCI can be traced to a single lecture in 2nd year psych. I experienced one of those AHA moments, when I suddenly realised that psychology was necessary to the H side of HCI, it was a practical use for psych, the world clearly needed help with software design, and that was what I'd like to do. In general HCI interests me as a branch of cognitive psychology that allows you to control one half of the equation (the computer) and observe the effect on the person. And then it gets messy and more interesting :-)
media analysis
Continuing the theme of human-everything interaction, I enjoy examining most types of media to try to determine what it was trying to achieve and how well it did it. I like to imagine the motivations of ad executives, movie set designers, graphic artists, sign writers, bloggers. It gives me room to stretch my emotional, social and cultural muscles beyond the bare necessities of communicating cold information.
xena
What's the attraction? Hmmm, could be the leather... Xena was a fun show and a great character. Unlike Hercules, she smiled going in to battle. She/the show had depth, growth and a sense of humour, and lots of fun production design. How many ways can *you* build a muddy village set?
lamb shanks
Tasty and fun to pick up and sink your teeth into. I'm not a fan of messy food, but sometimes you just need to pick something up and bite it. Alternatively, they're cooked so tender the meat just falls away and is meltingly delicious.
cheesecake
I remember the first time I had white chocolate cheesecake; it was at Giovanni's in Leederville. I imagine there are those that would frown on a cheesecake-inspired religious experience, but ooooh the right one really presses my endorphin buttons. Light, fluffy, lemon is best. Cream just gets in the way. I miss cheesecake.
justin timberlake
I just like to dance to the music.
