One of my cousins is a cancer researcher and has been feeding the odd bleeding-edge oncology research paper to Mum, for a bit of light reading between MRIs.

Which leads me to a question: what other lit or films does this scenario remind you of? Apparently normal human reacts badly to treatment and is later revealed to be not quite human. A handful of X-Files episodes at least. Probably a bunch of superhero-type things, definitely including The Man From Atlantis. I vaguely remember the pilot episode where a team of doctors were trying to resuscitate The Man and failing until the heroine dragged him into the ocean, where he revived.

Hero revealed to be a machine or a clone or otherwise not a real boy would count, so bits of Bladerunner are in.
