EvilCat(tm) is not quite herself. Sometimes this takes the form of being not as evil as usual. This evening she's taken a left turn at Albequerque into extra extra evil land.

She'd been lurking in the back room, after several days of being extra-clingy interspersed with bouts of extreme energy. I took the latter as a good sign actually; she'd been rushing about and attacking the toy mice, running up and down surfaces both sanctioned and unsanctioned. I'd been hearing a fair bit of hissing, but that's not particularly unusual. Cally and Princess have never really got on (except when they declare temporary truces to nap inches apart), but it's a bit like old-married-couple bickering. The kind that doesn't usually result in homicide. We also get Cally-clone lurking about outside and poking its tongue out through the windows. All three of them have a go at the glass then.

Just minutes ago, however, Cally was growling and hissing even at Pumpkin, which is not at all typical. I've seen Pumpkin sail up to Cally while she's eating, poke her innocently and ponderously, then wander off unmolested. He's such a non-threat to the power structure he can get away with just about anything. In his place, Princess would be torn a new one.

Unfortunately Cally was making her stand on the cat tower right next to the cat trays, and both Princess and Pumpkin were forced to back off, crossing all four paws. Those two will wait until after dinner--no matter what they're served, or at what time, or even if they eat it at once--before visiting the trays. I tried to pick Cally up to move her away and give the others a chance to do the deed, but she growled, hissed and flattened her ears until we all backed away in delicate slow motion. She also made a huge fuss through the back window with completely flattened ears, but apart from her reflection I couldn't see a thing. Ther could easily have been another cat out there, but there was something about her eyeline and focus that suggested she was hissing only at herself.

I took one of the trays to the other wet area. There was much rejoicing *scrape scrape scrape... AAAAHHHHHHH... scrape scrape scrape*.

A bit of cautious poking and prodding later I'm not really sure what's up. Her belly seems full and tight, but that--and the bad temper--could be a secondary effect of discomfort in her arthritis at the base of her spine. She's quite mobile, restless even. She certainly seems anxious and irritable over and above the call of evil, purring and smearing with something like desperation. I've seen her twitch a few times this last week (while awake) but not often enough to be of concern at the time. Tonight I got away with the examination unscathed, but she's getting the crazy eyes and I know when to stop. If this goes on I'll have to get her into The Cage. My blood type is A+.

And now we watch, and wait. It's a pity art therapy isn't an option; it would be interesting to see what she'd make of a family portrait right now.

EDIT: She's calmer now, but possibly overwashing her hindquarters.
