Busy day

Conference planning continued today, although I allowed myself to be annoyed at the expensive consultant (henceforth to be known as the EC) for being 1 1/2 hours late. This was not helped by the surprising new discovery that the EC was only on the clock for two half days a week. That certainly explains both his presence and lack of progress between meetings. However, he gets a lot of credit for being aware of different working styles so we're still communicating OK. Not bad for an ex-lawyer.

Pushed through a couple of choking episodes to last until mid afternoon, which I'm quite pleased about. I'm going to have to find something to soothe the throat and help me swallow that I'm allowed to eat (I miss butter menthols). Warm water did not cut the mustard, but it's worth trying again. The architects have mostly learned to ignore me but the medical supplies people on the other side came to the rescue today.

That "extremely painful" surgical option is starting to look attractive.

Made the trek+train+trek to visit BB for massage therapy and feet washing. Was pleasantly surprised by my unexpected facility in the tricky art of dressing a large albeit co-operative adult in thigh-high pressure socks. He was not well today :-(

Only one public lift was working today, but when I went to leave the little "staff use only" sign was up. I was trapped on the 7th floor! I conspired with a fellow visitor and we took a staff lift down, but I felt guilty. I knew that Nuns were lurking somewhere near, and I was doing a Bad Thing.

More creative ways to commute
The clientele of the Fremantle line are significantly more interesting than those of the Joondalup line.

The trek+train+train trip home was complicated by a broken and blocked escalator at the main Perth station. This created an alarming amount of chaos, requiring the crowds to leave the station to get down to the platform via an unofficial entrance. Somewhere along the way I think my Smartrider got out of synch, but it was too late for assistance. Goodness, 5:30pm, who'd have thought customers might require assistance?

AFAIK I'm currently on a train departing Warwick station and headed for Darwin. Unfortunately out-of-synch cards are managed by resetting after a fixed period and charging the maximum fare. With the opening of the Mandurah line the maximum fare is now about $8 so I'll have to keep an eye on my credit balance.

Applicance death
Missed some key moments of pottery analysis on Time Team this afternoon when we intermittantly lost 1 3/4 speakers. The old TV remote allowed us to increase the volume to compensate, but when the sound snapped back we were deafened until I could scramble over the coffee table and perform the inverted and hairy task of manually lowering the volume. The modern TV is not designed with manual operation in mind, particularly if you are taller than 2' and have long hair. Thank heavens the mute button still works.

Bills bills bills
This afternoon received the bill for the balance of the sleep study. I'd almost forgotten about it.

Swancon
Now the Tin Duck nominations are out I have to get myself into gear and collect print images of all nominated fan and professional artwork to go on the Swancon front desk.

I have so much more to do before then.

Do you know if the "natural lemon flavour" in Lemsip is likely to be citric acid and therefore failsafe?

I don't know if these contain any no-nos for you, but they work a right treat for me.

I'm afraid not - they're chock full of bad things!

for the throat problem

are you allowed any type of boiled sweet? because you might find that they help. Also, are you allowed any of the standard ingredients for soothing of throats (honey, lemon juice, menthol, umm, other stuff)? Because I have a stack of recipes for boiled sweets, some of which are quite simple, and I suspect that some experimentation should be able to create simple throat lozenges. This is something I've been thinking about doing for a while, because I hate buying the commercial ones (almost all of which are made by Nestle or their subsiduaries).

Boiled sweets with any kind of fruit flavour = no
Barley sugar = maybe, I'll need to check.
Honey = no
Maple syrup/golden syrup = yes

lemon juice = no
citric acid = yes

menthol/eucaluptus oil/mint/aloe vera etc = no

However, celery (the wonder vegetable) seems to help me clear the throat - it's probably the bulk combined with the moisture, and it's an anti-inflammatory.
