Title: Filling the Gaps in Enterprise Systems
The presentation
All enterprise solution implementations leave many critical business processes inadequately supported. Historically, organisations have had three basic options to overcome functionality gaps in their enterprise solutions. They could engage in lengthy and expensive process re-engineering projects, purchase costly vendor customisations, or allow individuals to develop workarounds.
The most common response is to make subject matter experts such as accountants, production managers, engineers and business analysts develop their own ad hoc or "feral" systems and solutions. Such solutions often feature a significant manual component, are inefficient, isolated, and of dubious quality.
This presentation will:
* Demonstrate how to recognise feral systems, and the dangers they represent to data quality, process flow, auditability, and both personal and organisational efficiency.
* Introduce XempleX as an innovative and unique service-oriented technology with a graphical design environment.
* Describe how to use XempleX to replace and integrate feral systems.
* Describe and discuss some of the psychological, sociological and organisational issues associated with change management.
Goals and Outcomes
* Introduce students to some of the practical realities of business solution deployment.
* Teach students to recognise the nature and effects of patchwork, ad hoc, and feral solutions.
* Introduce students to a change management strategy enabled by new technology.
So what do you think? Educationally sound despite the subtly concealed vendor plug? Would you sit through an hour of this for 10% of your annual ICT Professional Development credits? There's free beer afterwards ;-)
