I thought I might get access to a backup copy *cough* of PhotoShop today, but in lieu of that I've installed an ancient backup copy *cough* of Paint Shop Pro 9.
PSP certainly has enough functionality to keep me busy for a while relearning the basics of raster image manipulation. I've been a vector girl for quite a few years now so I need to get back into the arty swing of things. This sort of software is not wildly expensive to buy so if it looks like I'll be using it long term I plan to cough up the dosh. Happy to take recs, but please be polite when I remind you that I'm using 64bit Win7, m'kay?
Here's a combined microscope+PSP image trial of one of my plumed geodes. I really love these formations and I've bought a job lot of them on ebay which will be lots of fun to explore. In this one I see a surfing octopus, but I also take a lot of interesting prescription drugs.

I just ran whole image filters over this for now. Just brightness/contrast/sharpness for now. I use a laptop trackpad so I'm not sure that making odd sized selections and using brushes are quite doable yet. We shall see. If I need to plug in a mouse I'll need to rearrange my furniture to accommodate.
ED: Here's the next generation of tinkering:

A bit of blue and some edge-preserving smoothing.
