stephbgEven less than a review than usual of Acorna's children: Third Watch by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough. I advise fans to stop reading (this post, not necessarily the book which you might like) after the first sentence.
If you liked the other Acorna books, you'll probably like this. I don't like the other Acorna books, and I've got all of them. I started Third Watch a while ago but had so thoroughly forgotten the events of the prequel Second Wave that I had to go back and reread it. This isn't particularly unusual, but I'm not entirely convinced I've even read the previous book before. *That* is unusual.
I personally found it dire, but I think a lot of that comes from the book being aimed at a juvenile audience (I hope). I much prefer books with adult--or at least mature and observant--protagonists. I could wax lyrical about why I didn't like it, but I believe the flaw lies in the marketing rather than the product. If I had the energy I could critique the work on its merits relating to its actual target audience, but that would make it a proper review unsuited to this little corner of lj.
There's a longer post on the boil about this McCaffrey drift to childish things. OK, it's been going on for a long time (decades in fact), but her earlier works are still sold right next to the new kiddie stuff. I'm confused!
I suppose it's totally my fault for being attracted to Space Plague stories, no matter what the warning signs. Also, being a completist is hell.
PS I never did get a response to my favourable not-a-review of a certain Swancon GoH's latest football book. Strange that, since he turns up online for any and every mention of his books. I'm tempted to ask someone to anonymously host my review to see if he'll respond without my name attached. For Science, of course.
