Avatar was, in a word, pretty. On balance I liked it, but it wasn't a complete triumph by any means.
Hmmm. One's also tempted to say "stupid". Or maybe: Ooh Aah blam blam OOOOOH AAAAAH BLAM BLAM.
BLAM
There was a lot for me to like in this film. Evil giant corporation with evil giant mining operation (nice GIS systems there - I wonder how they do their financials?). Spaceships. Guns. Neuroscience. Obsessed military types. Stupid deployment thereof. I wouldn't have minded a few more company people showing signs of conscience.
However, the noble savages could have used a bit more personality and I kept thinking of them asangry teddy bears Ewoks. They could have done a better job using rocks and sticks, never mind the whacky powers of The Vortex, or all that spare electrical current everywhere.
Excuse me, but "unobtainium"? That's a trick you can only pull once and The Core got there first. The inconsistent bullet physics was a little irritating. Inevitable, but irritating. Ditto the dispatch of the heroine's betrothed/future leader to avoid any awkwardness. Sigh.
It was too long. Nothing to do with my bladder. That said, there were missed opportunities in the script. One of the remote-access thingies was described as "the least glitchy" but no glitches were subsequently mentioned. Errors are fun. Errors are interesting.
Beasties good, although where the blue mammalian humanoids fit in with the otherwise reasonably consistent six-limbed ecosystem is something of a mystery to me.
Nice use of ears and tail to convey emotion in an otherwise humanoid character.
I wasn't very excited by the idea of Sam Worthington, but he grew on me. Not significantly, but I can probably remember his face now. Loved Sigourney Weaver. Loved loved loved her.
shrydar I will never look at you the same way ever again.
