It's an old saw that only the even-numbered Star Trek films are any good. It's certainly a rollercoaster ride when you see them in quick succession.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

I didn't really know what to expect from ST:VI; I'd been dreading V for so long I really hadn't given VI much thought. Well, it was much much better than V, that's for sure. Given that V was deliberately attempting humour, VI managed it far more successfully on multiple occasions. It also had a script worth the name.

It was nice to see Kirk get some quality biffo, and a goodbye kiss from an alien chick. Also a nice touch that he got to wrestle with the traditional Evil Double. I *loved* the gag that kissing himself was a dream come true :-)

I'm slowly getting retrained in what a Klingon looks like. I liked that the older ones were the most human-looking as in TOS. Given their casual attitude to industrial health and safety, I like the theory that they've become bumpier over the years due to pollution-triggered mutation. I've no idea what the official line is on that, but it works for me.

It was nice to have the baddies treated a bit more seriously. A bit.

My infrastructure buttons were pressed by the scenes in the galley, wardrooms, and crew quarters. Finally, some of those 430 odd redshirt-candidates get a look in.

So, a few holes in the script, but on the whole it was one of the good ones. I liked it.
