Pretty rocks of the day: Rutilated quartz

My rutilated quartz pieces are clear quartz with golden needles intruding through the middle. The tumbled specimen looks like spun gold suspended in glass, and unfortunately I wasn't able to really capture the shiny on them all. It's a frustrating business, photographing shiny things from a position of ignorance.

Broken rock of the day: Apophyllite crystal

You'll be seeing a lot of apophyllite; it's a group name for several very common species of mineral, and it comes in multiple forms and colours. Unfortunately this is (was) one of my better specimen pieces and it broke my heart when it broke in The Great Shelf Collapse. I found most of the bits and put them together to give you some idea of how it looked before.
