Home sick today with Matthew's sore throat and clingy pussiecats. Yesterday 5 Freo prison guides were off sick so it looks like a tourist-delivered plague.

Last night I managed to make pea+mushroom+ham soup with a ham hock I bought a couple of days ago. Unfortunately my big soup pot still hadn't recovered from my successful attempt to burn a lamb shank curry (the secret - leave it simmering for up to an hour without stirring - does wonders for carbon production on the bottom of the pot). Matthew's been hacking away at the burned bits between soakings, but it wasn't recovered in time (I was getting nervous about how long I could keep the ham hock for) so I had to get creative.

Creative meant making soup in the oven with my biggest covered roasting dish. Rather to my surprise it worked quite well, with lots of tender bacony bits, and well-softened grains. There's some in the freezer now so we won't have to work through it continuously until we're sick of it. Mother's pea and ham soup is a complete institution so I was pleased to make something of comperable standard.
