Beware [livejournal.com profile] mynxiis bearing flattery, for I have just been expertly recruited to the Swancon 2009 committee (or some affiliate thereof) to ruin run the art show.

But Steph, I hear you say, you never join committees. Ever. You toss around a lot of smart-arsed advice but you've never before got off that aforementioned smart arse to actually help constructively*. Not for the last 20 years or so. You'll have to attend meetings.

I say expertly for I have successfully avoided long term commitments to volunteerism since UniSFA. It's not that I'm adverse to helping. It's not that I doubt my personal fabulousness. I doubt my endurance, and have used that excuse to avoid a great deal of life. The fact that I know plenty of people who are either simply super-busy or ill/pregnant/parenting plus super-busy has previously led me to plenty of shame and guilt, but no action.

Today I thought to myself, I'm no Mother Theresa (I'm much too tall), but I can take that little extra step. (Aren't new years great?) If for honest reasons I can't do it, the show will go on and no-one (except perhaps myself) will blame me. If I fail for reasons of bad character, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

House News
My new action-self hit the phone again this afternoon and I secured my first kitchen company quote booking, and managed to not only talk to another ceiling person, but he was in the next suburb and came over within the hour.

I learned about ceiling strapping versus ceiling pinning. I watched with increasing anxiety as Dave The Friendly Ceiling Guy worked his way through my house with his nifty ceiling-nudger-on-a-pole tool and nudged my ceilings until they creaked and moved visibly. I sighed as further evidence of my house's dodgy construction history was revealed. Someone failed to prime correctly. Oh well, at least my puzzled perception of curves was correct.

Dave quoted a large figure in cash, "proper cash". I have a sneaking suspicion that Dave isn't that interested in GST legislation. I saw no business cards, business name or ABN, and certainly no formal written quote. Warranty? I think not. English accent? Co-incidentally, yes.

Curiously, I liked him. Odd that, for the other signs were very bad. I have another mob coming on Monday to quote but I don't have much time up my sleeve before the sky falls. Here's hoping I like them too and that they have a smaller quote, proper paperwork, and some kind of legal backing *snorfle*.

Tinsel news
I took down the Christmas tinsel today, but in doing so it knocked over part of the Stonehenge in my dining room, but not irretrievably. I'm sure there's some deep philosophical significance to that. Do let me know.

Dell news
There is no Dell news. Husband hung about the house this morning (9-12) waiting for The Dell Technician Who Was Never Going To Come Because They Were Sick. This was apparently to be kept a secret from the customers until 4pm when Dell called to say the technician wasn't coming. Pity they'd failed to notice we'd already called at 2pm to make alternative arrangements. Wednesday *laughs bitterly*.

I miss my B key, although I'm getting much faster at pressing the little squidgy nipple thingie instead of the key. Adaptable things, humans.

I did, however, write a testy letter of complaint, including my ire at their "24/7" telephone support service. Apparently it means "24 minutes every 7 days". Please hold. Grrrr.

Goth News
Back to Wildilocks this afternoon to claim my free CD, dammit, even if I am wearing pastels. Was greeted warmly and apologetically for the omission so I was clearly wasting paranoia points.

I now have some shiny new goth music to wave my arms to when Husband is out of the house. Shiny new goth music is more lushly produced but not dissimilar to dusty old goth music. Also looked for something gothy and black to go under my black corset, hopefully for [livejournal.com profile] strangedave's do tomorrow night. There's a distressing absence of black in my wardrobe right now. Black. Need black.

Hmmmm. I sense a theme. Mid life crisis for girls?
