Unscheduled post
This is a frivolous post. I have not assigned spoons for this, nor is it anywhere in my various lists of priorities. My lists of priority tasks are long; my spoons are short. I can't really afford this. But sometimes you just have to kick over the traces and do whatever you damn want to. So I'm going to ramble for a bit.

Not cricket: Inversions by Iain M. Banks
I've been working my way through Iain M Banks' Culture novels in order of publication, and today finished Inversions. That's the fantasy novel with only the barest sniff of Culture reference (and only if you know where to look, and even then you need to extrapolate between the lines), and yet it's marketed as science fiction. I think this is the first time I've finished it, having given it up in disgust the first time around waiting for the Minds, ships, drones, fun stuff, and sex changes to turn up. The fact that I can't remember if I read it through before speaks volumes. At least this time around I stopped waiting for the good bits to start, but it was a fairly ho-hum read.

A brief reflection on horror
In the last couple of years I've been reading more horror short fiction than before, usually via the path of delving into a particular author's catalogue. I'm also inclined to buy anthologies from publishers/editors that have a proven track record in choosing stories that I enjoy reading. Here I just ramble a bit about nothing particularly startling.

I've been doing a lot of reading lately, but all of it from the same work. I've reached page 838 of The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and have only to hang on until page 1009 before I'm done. Small font, narrow margins. Dense writing.

Forty Signs of Rain by Kim Stanley Robinson
To my knowledge I haven't read anything by Kim Stanley Robinson, but I've been staring down copies of Red/Blue/Green Mars at second hand shops for quite some time. A Worldcon I'm not going to seemed as good an excuse as any to try them out. Naturally they all disappeared at the first sign of actual interest, so in the meantime I picked up Forty Signs of Rain to try.

Evolution by Stephen Baxter
Evolution by Stephen Baxter is an astonishing piece of work. If you liked Walking With Dinousars/Beasts/Man then you'll appreciate the amount of research gone into this most epic of stories, and the translation of fossil record to narrative. Wow. Just wow. 762 pages of wow. I liked it and I was *impressed* by it.
