Small victories

Last night I had a plan to kick start my brain this morning to match the physical progress: coffee. Coffee also equals 'location other than home' which is a Good Thing. I was tempted to have my coffee at the zoo, but since I wanted to also attempt work-like activity I settled for the coffee and sandwich shop (it can't be called a cafe) in the middle of my small local shopping centre. And ye gods it worked a charm!

I've been doing some reading of my own work drafts up the point where things went pear shaped, trying to get my head around all the material I'd need to be able to proceed. In previous attempts I'd just picked up the pen to start working on the text, but I could do no more than surface edits where clearly some re-organisation was required. So, shift in strategy: spend time re-educating my brain about the whole problem. I'd managed a few reading sessions at home, and was ready to continue the study process this morning.

But I found I had enough content in my head to start making changes! Progress! Organisation! Chargeable work! (I don't charge for time spent getting back up to speed if nothing else has changed).

The coffee was OKish, if a bit weak, but the important thing was the new environment. Lots of natural light for a start, and for future reference a power point I can probably use if I want to bring the lapdown down. The ladies at the kiosk were quite happy for me to stay at my table long after the coffee went down, and I seemed to receive a general invitation to sit there any time. Sensible really, it makes the place look more cafe-like with semi-permanent residents.

The chair and table were just uncomfortable enough to remind me that I wasn't there for pleasure, but otherwise functional, but it was the human activity I enjoyed the most. There were just enough passing customers to give the place a bit of life, and a fair bit of cross-talk between the shop people themselves, many of whom I'm quite familiar with. It was like being in a busy office, with prams.

I was opposite the butcher which not only gave me a nice view of all the protein on display, but wide smiles of greeting when the butcher caught my eye. Lovely bloke. They also have a plasma screen on the back wall running propaganda for the south west, where their meat comes from.

After about 90 minutes of this I reached a sensible place to stop so went home to my own personal stash of cabbage and plumbing.

But it didn't stop there! Now I'd done enough major paper edits to start to think seriously about updating the electronic version which I hadn't quite set up on the laptop. So, I did some installing and tinkering and set up a test. I then took myself, my laptop and my test to the office to see if the transfer would work MUAHAHAHAHA!

Like a charm, as they say. Also picked up Visio so I can do digrams on this machine, so am in a much better position to work remotely in the small doses I can manage these days. All up I clocked a full half day and really feel like I'm building some momentum.

Where to from here? Well, I can't drink coffee every day, but I might try taking the laptop to the cafe tomorrow to start implementing some of the changes I've already worked on. Perhaps with a placebo decaf.

Cally
Cally's main wound has healed a bit more over the last few days, so I'm now more confident about removing the bucket at the 2 week mark. Late tomorrow or Thursday sometime.

Theatre
We plan to see A Day In The Death of Joe Egg featuring our very own [livejournal.com profile] angriest next Wednesday night, as Husband has the following Thursday off and the late night can be accommodated. Theoretically, at least; many of his days off get consumed by other guides' illness.

CSI: Star Trek
I really enjoyed the Star Trek themed episode of CSI. Sure it showed obsessed nerdy fans in costumes, but the script also allowed for just about everyone else on screen to say that they watched the show when they were kids and really loved it (i.e. a continuity of experience, not just the isolated outliers). Hodges' fantasy/daydream sequences were extra amusing because they were based on particular episodes we'd only seen in the last few weeks.

Actual ST:TOS
Tonight sadly featured the gangster/untouchables episode "A Piece of the Action". Bad. Very very Bad. Although the driving scenes saved it. The evening was fortunately saved by the eminently predictable "Return to Tomorrow", although my hope that Christine Chapel and Spock's body would get some lovin' was sadly dashed. He did smile at her wickedly.

Cooking
Note to self: If one is planning to make garlic squid it would probably helped to have acquired some garlic. Salt and rice flour squid was a little dull, but edible.
