Great big chunky spider pictures

See that subject line? You have been warned. Found this charming beastie in my carport just now. She's very very big. And very very chunky. At first I was impressed at how much anatomical detail I managed to capture, but then reconsidered my fortune for she was about three feet across after all. For the photo buffs I was using my Panasonic DMZ-LZ1 Point&Shoot&Run.

Wildlife encounters: Praying mantis

Tonight in the shadows around the bins at Sector 7 I saw not another giant spider, but a giant praying mantis, and as a bonus it looked very much like she was laying eggs. Baby praying mantises are very cute.

Let's talk about spiders

Just now I popped out the door to put something in the bin, and as I lifted the lid I raised my eyes, as you do, and saw something very very close to my head, if not my heart.

Spider tales

I take drugs. Prescription ones--all strictly legal--but the sleeping pills occasionally provoke interesting moments. If the timing is right I get to do things that I don't quite remember the next day. The most recent example involved a large 'orrible 'airy spider, which then led me today to an act of short-lived bravado and high-pitched screaming.

Animal remains

For reasons that escape me (but possibly including the desire to avoid the 2009 wrap-up post) I thought I'd make a list of all of the animal products and/or remains I have or have had around my house. I'm not aware of any broken laws, although I might get in trouble if I tried to sell some of them.

It started as a list of curios (see tiger), but expanded to include edibles (see chicken), and then fauna (see cockroaches), but there's no way I'm going to list every species on my property. I've also made no attempt to list all the applications of one particular species (you want to track down all the wool and leather in your house, go right ahead). So in no particular order and with no claims to thoroughness:

The non-human parts of Adelaide

I'll ease into the Adelaide trip reporting with small furry animals. In large furry animal news I also now have a panda in the fridge, which strained my hand luggage allowance. Actually I brought home two but I ated one already.

Doggies and horsies and sunshine oh my!

Husband occasionally gets Ideas. "We shall go to the beach on Sunday, at dawn!" he said a few days ago.

Rowr!

It wouldn't be a day in my life if I didn't take stock of the wildlife I encountered over and above the usual cat and Husband quota. Read more... )

Sunshine catchup

I find myself in that most fortunate of states, to be falling behind in blogging duties due to real life fulfillment. Here's a possibly brief rundown of my last two days in the sun. I like sun. Particularly when it's not hot.

Small furry animal spoons

Up early again this morning and made an effort to do some work but was distracted by unscheduled cat vomit and laundry. I then realised that the sun was shining, so sacrificed a narrow window of opportunity to visit [livejournal.com profile] emma_in_oz in order to get myself to the zoo and stretch my legs. Sorry Em!

Furry, scaled and feathered. )

The next one is free

Made my way to the zoo again today for a walk and some furry action. I find myself motivated by many things, amongst them the desire to make the most of the winter sun. That's three trips now (and a 10% discount on a red panda puppet), so I've made back the cost of my Zoo Friend membership. The rest is gravy :-)

Blue skies

Was comparatively physically OK again today, albeit brainless. Went to the folks to collect some ex-lounge carpet to cover up the tiles here, then on to the zoo for a walk and to work on getting my Zoo Friend's money's worth.

AND the horse you rode in on

As is the occasional habit of our household, this evening Husband was regaling me with the tales of small furry animals that he had discovered in the day's news.
