Stargate: Universe
I really really really wanted to like the premiere of Stargate: Universe (SGU), and in theory it was an attractive proposition with spaceships and guns, and the involvement of John Scalzi, although sadly not as a writer.
Not really. I liked it enough to give it some more time, so that's a start, but it took itself much too seriously. Still, that's something that could potentially improve as the ensemble cast gets its collective groove on. Then again, it might not. Mr Comedy Relief was not sufficient.
I wasn't greatly encouraged by the convenience of the setting. Stranded on a spaceship that mysteriously takes care of you? *cough*Lost*cough*. Occasionally useful discoveries in back corridors? A potential way home but severely limited chances to make it work? Endless opportunities for new things and people to arrive? Time travel?
*cough*Lost*cough*
That said, the standard lifeboat story line doesn't have to be a disaster. And the conflict between the military and civilian populations is always interesting. I quite liked the young Soldier Boy Hero Pushed Beyond His Comfort Zone But Showing Real Steel Under His By-The-Book Officer Training. What was his name? Apollo?
*cough*Battlestar Galactica*cough*
We'll see.
