I have a sickly hard disk. Early on in the diagnostic process I ran a check disk, which was fine... so I went hunting spyware and stuff. But I still found enough disk errors in the event logs to make me thonk that something was dying, so I tried check disk again. I think it took 8 hours to run. And now to see if it's alive enough to manage the transition to something new. This PC Win Dell laptop is a bit over three years old, so I'm not terribly surprised the HD is giving me trouble. I just want the most painfree process for getting back into stability land.

It's been a tough few hours without my little friend here.

If it's a real hardware failure, not just Windoze being crap, that's rather early. First thing I'd check is the SMART diagnostics. Second thing I'd check is the warranty. (Many disks have 3 year warranties. Seagate usually has 5 year.)

From Event Viewer today (AFTER the marathon chkdsk session last night):

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:.

... What's a SMART diagnostic?

One of these. (Being brief as power's out here, so I'm shutting the PC down.)
