Just received our water use bill and the news is good. Although our block is quite large (819m2) our water consumption was 23.7% of our suburb's average without a bore, and 37.2% of the suburb average household even with a bore. So we're using much less water on the garden and in the house than the neighbours.

Only two of us, granted, but we don't have a lawn or a pool, and the retic system is mostly drippers when I remember to run it. Haven't put any new plants in for a while, so that might change when I start replacing the fallen, but they'll have to be tough plants anyway. We're both short-shower trained.

When we first bought the place I looked at rainwater tanks as an alternative to soakwells for the first urgent round of drainage works, but it just didn't work out. I haven't done anything about greywater recycling. There's a lot of concrete around the laundry, and the garden is already on starvation rations.

I wonder if I'll ever build again? The idea has certain attractions, if accompanied by time and cash :-)
