Affix stamp here

Forced by the crushing weight of government pressure, I finally got around to my 2008 Q2 BAS today. Actual income tax return awaits the arrival of bits of paper. Income=pitiful. Medical expenses=ouch. Lump sum in savings=rapidly depleting. Determination to be well=apparently irrelevant.

Anywho, this post was supposed to be a protest against government language in the smallest of places: the return envelope for my BAS to the tax department.

"Affix stamp here" it says. Why couldn't it be "Put stamp here"? Is there any danger a user would merely place but not attach appropriate postage in that spot? What if they use a franking machine? I can't imagine what value is gained from using a complex word in this instance rather than the most simple alternative.

I lack the will to summon additional brain cells for the problem, so if anyone can explain why "affix" is better than "put" for general comprehension purposes, please enlighten me.
